I did a seminar at Bass Pro Shops in Charlotte,NC and we raffled off a 1/2 day fishing trip and today we ran that trip.

We were fishing with Hugh Patton and his son Jason from Kannapolis,NC and with them was Nathan Barnhardt from Salisbury,NC.

I was dreading having to tell them about not being able to leave Friday morning due to the heavy fog, but it had lifted enough where visibility was not bad, so we were able to leave on time!!

The spot I had in mind to start is usually pretty good this time of year, but this morning there wasn't anything on these rocks.

I came down from the helm and discussed the fact that I would rather they get to fish less time in waters that had fish than to fish longer where there were no fish!!

But, just because I find fish doesn't mean they will bite, but at least finding fish will give them that option to bite!!!

Everyone was in agreement with that concept, so, as I do when I have to, I threw the fact that it was a short day overboard, and we headed farther offshore to around 85 feet of water.

It turned out to be the right decision!!!

Check out the big 44 inch Red Drum that Hugh fought and was victorious. For this he will be recieving a "NC CITATION" award for a catch and release.

He and the guys also caught several Gag Grouper but they were all just short of the 24" legal size so we released those as well.

A lite line was no good on this trip, the water was too cold, but the bottom fish bit pretty good until the tide went slack and by that time the winds had picked the seas up to 4 to 5 feet so we headed to the marina to clean fish.

Another great day on the water with great people!!! Till next time, Blessings!!!

Today was not as much a fishing trip but more of a fishing adventure.

I was fishing with some home town guys today. Kieth Yokley from Lexingon,NC who owns "YOKLEY AUCTION"  with him was Marvin Johnson and his son Marvin from Lexington,NC as well.

We ran out to the SW of the Tower and got set up for some bottom fishing and lite lining and was rewarded with co-operative fish and good seas. The full moon currents were strong, but we prevailed!!

Captain Chris was mating for us today and even though he has not been with me for a couple years now, he still has the old "blue thumb" ability to get you fish hooked up on a right regular basis.

A lot of you that have fished with us know the story of the "Blue Thumb"!!!

Bottom fish and King Mackeral were coming in the boat from all corners!!

I am so glad he has decided to join me again to work the cockpit of the boat this year, there is not a better mate or captain that I know of!!!!

These guys can say that they were on an fishing/adventure today. We got in the worse fog I have ever been in.

I truly know what "0" visibility means now!!! Until you get into what the "old salts" call a "fog bank", you will never know what it is, and I hope you never do!!!

Believe me, you don't ever want to experience this!!!

The fog was so thick, you could NOT see the Light House at all, FROM AN|YWHERE!!! We thought they might have had a power failure, they didn't, you just couldn't see it!!!

Had we not had "RADAR" on the boat, it could have been bad!!!

Especially with the Tug boat that was pulling a barge right in the middle of the river channel and the Bald Head Ferry's running. But we do have "RADAR" and all is well!!!!

It was truly an adventure and Captain Chris made the comment about this is what makes it fun!! That's the younger side of his reckoning!!!

I knew he was growing up and got tickled a little later when he made the comment "You know, this isn't funny anymore"!!

Son, you are a fine Man and a great Captain and we Love you very much, WELCOME BACK, it's been too long!!!!

Till next time, God Bless You All!!!!

Can you believe this, it's the last day of November.

I know I have let you down lately with being slow on the reports and I do apologise!!!

It is the time of year when I don't seem to have enough time to get everything done.

You have to get everything ready for the next season this time of year, reel and tackle maintenance and shows and seminars.

Which reminds me I will be at "FIRE MOUNTAIN STEAK HOUSE" in Kernersville,NC tomorrow evening around 6:30PM with a Grouper/Bottom fishing and chart reading seminar. Come on out if you can make it!!

Also, I am doing the "Cape Fear Report" again  for the "COASTAL CAROLINA FISHING REPORTS TV SHOW". Go there to get all the fishing hot spots and how to's.

Also, don't forget the shows this year at Greensboro,NC Raleigh,NC and Richmond, VA. I have a link to the shows right here on this fishing reports page, check them out and attend some seminars!!!

As you can see, I have a lot going on right now, but I will try my best to keep at least my website more up to date.

OK, let's get caught up here on what's been happening with the fishing the past week.

Tuesday, 11-25-08 my wife and I went Speckled Trout fishing. We never got a bite!!!!

I was thinking that I should give up the inside fishing but felt better after talking to several other Trout fishermen that are known to be pretty good and they had the same results.

Wednesday, 11-26-08 I had a "BIG" treat this day!! My son Captain Chris came down to fish with me.

We went again after the Speckled Trout. We had one of those days that you could do nothing wrong.

I was throwing a YO-ZURI Crystal Minnow in a Blue and silver and Capt. Chris was using a 17MR MIRRO LURE one in red and silver and the other in blue and silver.

We were putting on a show Wednesday for everyone else, we caught 11 Speckled Trout up to 3+ pounds in just a couple of hours.

Like I said, one of those days that whatever we did was right, or thinking back now I am beginning to believe my wife just might be the "fish jinx"!!!

Thursday, 11-27-08 I couldn't believe it, Capt. Chris was coming to our house again to spend Thanksgiving with us. My wife and I were ecstatic. A whole day with our son together, something that just doesn't happen anymore.

And as close as Capt Chris and I were when he was growing up, well, Thursday I felt whole again even though it was for only a day.

All though these days are very few and very far apart, at this point in my life I now live for those days!!!!!

Now what does two Captains do when they spend time together, they go fishing.

This time we took the "YEAH RIGHT II" out for some near shore bottom fishing. We were hoping to hook up with some of those big red drum that are out there this time of year but we
didn't get any of those. We caught plenty of Black Bass!!!

Friday 11-28-08 I ran a trip with Casey Cronan from Charlotte & Oak Island, NC, Keith Cronan from Chesterfield,VA, Neill & Lauren Goslon from Durham,NC and Rob & Alicia O'Brien from Midlothian,VA.

We were scheduled for a full day trip but the weather didn't co-operate offshore so we did a 1/2 day close in and we also got into the Black Bass and Blue Fish.

And yesterday it rained like a frog strangler off the beach. How do I know that?

Because we were fishing with Bob, Brian, Jay Bostwick from Greenville,SC and with them was Mark Prak from Raleigh,NC.

This was another 1/2 day trip and the rains and winds had slowed the bite some from the day before but we had a great time and caught all the Black Bass, sea bream, pig fish, and Blue Fish we wanted.

Looks like the winds are going to blow for a few days now, but it is that time of year you know!!

Till next time, God Bless All!!!

                                                           Fish On!!!
                                                               Capt Butch
P.S. We got a "Gremlin" in our computer, as soon as we get it out, and Capt. Chris is hard at work trying to figure it out, we will have the pic's up here!!

Capt Butch has been really busy lately so I thought I would at least let you know the fish are still there. Joe, Pam, and Candi Small along with David Naundorf and Donald Blalock of Charlotte, NC went out and filled this cooler with an assortment of bottom fish. Capt Butch will give you a better rundown of the types of fish later.

Saturday and Sunday the wind blew and blew and blew and... you get picture. Hopefully it wil calm down soon. Till then take care and God bless!!  Barbara

Today we fished with Attorney Kody Jones, Kody  brought with him his brother Kevin. Kody and Kevin are from Greensboro,NC. With them were Joe Coker and Ned Johnson from Fayetteville,NC.

If you need any assistance with Patents, Trademarks, Copyrights or Unfair Competition give Kody a call @ (336) 273-4422 or Email @ kjones@maccordmason.com

We started off on the WOFES looking for some Grey Trout and Red Drum but didn't find any there.

We moved from there to AR-420 and after a little looking around I stopped the "YEAH RIGHT II" on what I thought looked like trout on the bottom, and yep, that's what they were.

I had to find some fish, with the anchor not holding, these guys I think were starting to think I didn't know what I was doing, I was beginning to wonder myself.

I've got to get a bigger anchor for this boat, this boat's heavy!!!!

Although we didn't  hook up with a Red Drum, which is unusual this time of year, I don't think anyone was too upset.

We were hooking and catching Blue Fish and Grey Trout about as fast as you could drop.

I said hooking because we probably lost as many or more than we caught.

Then the winds got up, the fish shut off, but that was OK, we had our limit, had our fun and fresh fish dinners and it was time to head to the marina, clean the fish and go home!!

We had a great time fishing, catching, and just enjoying the beautiful day and the great fellowship we had today.

Till next time, God Bless All!!!!
                                                                Fish On!!!!

It's been a tough three months, but it looks like I am finally back in the running again...

Just ask Leland Land, Larry Land, Paige Blakley, and Leland Harley from High Point, NC.

The seas were a little "sporty" going out today and everyone was talking about how bad the weather man had missed the forecast.

Although I know he does miss at times, and sometimes pretty bad, but I think he was right on today. He had said 15 to 20 knot NE winds deminishing to 10 knots N in the evening, and that's what it did. The ride home was great!!

Back to the fishing. I always hate to be the one that says it's time to go home.

But I know I have done my job when I bring the subject up and everyone is in agreement that they had had all the catching they can handle for one day.

These guys had limits of Grey Snappers, sharks, B-Liners, Black Bass, Triggerfish, Amber Jacks, Joltheads, Silver Snapper, Almaco Jacks, Calico Bass, and grouper.

Yep, looks like the "YEAH RIGHT II" has sucessfully taken over the duties of the original "YEAH RIGHT" and she is doing it in comfort and style!!!

So, come on to Southport and enjoy a fishing trip at a reasonable rate on a comfortable boat with a Captain who only wants the best for you and your family.

Just ask Leland and his group, they had a great time catching fish ( in some tough fishing conditions, to say the least) to the point that they are probably going to be sore tomorrow, but it's the good kind of sore!!!

Till next time, May God Bless Everyone!!!!

The calmer winds that the weather man talked about this morning never happened offshore today.

The fishing was good but the seas were rough with a 15 to 20 knot NE wind. Yeah, NE!!!

I kept waiting for the 8 second buzzer to go off up on the bridge of the "YEAH RIGHT II".

I was fishing with Doug Davis from Lexington,NC, Jonathan Davis from High Point,NC, and Gary Horan from Asheboro,NC

I started the day off at a ledge in the 340's. The fish were there and they were biting if you could get past the Sharks.

I made an anchor adjustment and got away from the sharks only to get into the tomtotes.

From that point on for a while it was tomtotes galore. I made the decision to go to deeper water.

The next 6 spots I went to had nothing on them. These places have fish on them always, but not today.

I was heading to the 7th spot when I marked a new ledge stacked up with fish.

And they were not sharks or tomtotes. We immediately started catching Grey Snappers, Joltheads, Grouper, (though most were too small to be legal, we did manage two keepers), however, we did have a couple bigger grouper get in the rocks  and break off, not good!!

Caught some nice Black Bass, (I may have found a good ledge for Black Bass), Triggerfish, got a King Mackeral off the bottom, Some big ol' B-Liners, Silver Snappers, and of course, Sharks!!!

It was rough today and the predicted calmer conditions never materalized, but I can say this, I was impressed at the rough sea handling capabilities of the CHRIS CRAFT.

I have always heard that CHRIS CRAFT built fine boats, and I now believe this to be true.

We are proud to have CHRIS CRAFT as our new addition to our Charter Boat Business.

Come fish with us on the "YEAH RIGHT II" and I think you will be as impressed as we are with CHRIS CRAFT BOATS!!

Till next time, God Bless All!!!!

No, I don't think I have gone number crazy. I am just trying to catch up this weeks reports here at one time!!

Monday the 27th the guys from DC and Maryland came down on the weather mans report of good weather. WRONG!!!

They drove so far that I hated not to try to get out, but it was just too rough to go so we aborted that trip.

Tues and Wed the 28th and 29th the winds howled, so these trips had to be cancelled as well.

Now Thursday the 30th we went on the beach on a 1/2 day trip and as expected, the winds from the first part of the week had the water dirty and stirred up real bad.

But, I did find Ray Liotta from Wilmington,NC, who by the way this trip was for his upcoming marrage, with him was RJ Liotta from New Orleans, LA, Kris Ponnequin from Houston, Texas, Keaton Hayenga from Seattle, Washington, Juan Espinoza from Wilmington,NC and Tim Hamulack from York, PA.

Like I said it was tough but I kept searching until I found some Grey Trout that would bite. It was fast and furious for a little bit but they soon moved on and we just picked at the fish the rest of the morning.

To be honest, with the water in the shape it was in, we did better that I figured we would do!! Still we had fun and got to spend some quality time together with others!!

Good luck Ray, I hope you and your wife live a long and happy life together, I will pray God Blesses you two well!!!

Till next time, Blessings to all!!!!

The winds have blown out most trips this week but not all of them.

This has been a special week for me and my wife, We got to make a couple of fishing trips with Dale and Ella Foster.

Dale and I go way back. In fact, we were talking about some of our earlier duck hunting trips when we were a lot younger and apparently a lot dumber.

We recollected one trip where we made our way to Hog island in Pamlico Sound one morning in a 14 foot jon boat in heavy seas with the boat loaded to the brim with decoys, dogs, and all the normal ducking paraphernalia.

Let me say that God does look after his own. If not, I would not be writing this and we would not be here to go fishing.

I recalled many memories the past few days and they were all great ones of times past fishing and hunting with a great friend and it was an honor to get to share some more great time in a boat with Dale, Ella, and my wife Barbara.

The first trip we made was offshore fishing for bottom fish.

The weather was beautiful, but, unfortunately we were in the pull of a full moon and the fishing was tough.

The current finally got so strong I could not get a 24 pound plow anchor to the bottom in 85 feet of water, that was a "screaming current" impossible to fish in.

But before it got that strong we did manage a few bottom fish, although the catch was not as good as the day before, Dale, along with assistance from Ella, did fight and bring to boat side a citation size shark.

The next trip we went on was to see if the Grey Trout and Red Drum were on the near shore reefs yet.

My answer to that is,YES, THEY ARE HERE!!!!

Now, It was fun fishing today with friends but there were so many Trout coming over the side of the boat at one time, the natural instinct of a charter captain made me throw my own fishing rod down and start taking fish off hooks.

Like I had a choice, I looked up and there were three Trout hanging on the ends of stingsilvers waiting to be unhooked.

Oh well, that is my job you know!!!

We even caught some Spanish Mackeral while jigging the Trout and some nice croakers as well!!

It was fast and furious catching, plus, my wife lost a Grey Trout at boat side that would have definitely got her a citation, and qualifying size for Grey Trout is 5 pounds or live release of fish 24 inches or longer.

To review the listings for citation fish go to www.ncdmf.net/fishfind/citation.htm

As for the Red Drum, we were wanting to get a citation for a Red Drum and had two chances. Both Dale and Ella hooked one up, but the fish managed to pull free before we could get them to boat side, maybe next time will be our time.

Speaking of citation size fish, Dale and I were talking and he came up with a great idea that I am going to employ into "YEAH RIGHT CHARTERS" fishing trips from now own.

North Carolina has a great citation program in place and I am going to issue all the citation certificates for qualifying fish that are caught on our boat from this point forward.

This will be a very nice addition to our services and something that you will remember for a lifetime and  pass on to your children and grandchildren.

Dale has helped me a lot by letting me know from a customer's point of view things that would help me out, and this is another great idea Dale has thought of. Thanks Dale, you have always been a great friend and help!!!!

The fall fishing is under way pretty good at this time. The King Mackeral bite is hit and miss lately.

The Spots seem to be having a time getting by all the nets on the beach lately, come go fishing with us, we will go where the fish are instead of waiting for the fish to come to us!!!

Got to go for now, this week is booking up almost full so if weather permits, we should have reports of what's happening on line again to help you plan your own fishing trip.

Yep, it's been a battle the past few months, but God knew what was best for me and now we are back better than ever before with a very comfortable fishing boat for your enjoyment!!!

One other thing, Dale asked me last night if staying at the same price would hurt my business. I know what he is saying.

Some people will probably think that by me not increasing my rates that we are not any good, and I won't be able to change their minds, I experienced this when I was in Taxidermy, some people think the more they pay the better it will be, and in a lot of cases this is true.

But this is not "rocket science" this is fishing, and all charter boats fish in the water!!!

To those that think that more is better is your right for living in a free country, there are plenty of charter boats out there that charge a lot more than I do. So, if you want to pay more, you have that right as well!!

But, I have had to work hard all my life and I know how hard it is to make a living and still have the money to enjoy life a little.

And in today's economy, it's more important than ever to give someone a break.

So, with that, I try to keep my rates where it will help my fishermen, I hope you appreciate all we do and I hope you realize that we don't do what we do just for the money, if it was just for the money, we would be a lot more expensive than we are and with a lot less customer service!!!

Till next time, Thanks for your continued supoport, I love you all, and I hope God Blesses you as He has me!!!!!

                                                             Fish On!!!!

Let me try to catch up a little here. I know I haven't been as punctual here as I need to be, but I can see the proverbial "light at the end of the tunnel" now, I think!!

As in fishing everyone that fishes offshore knows  that every day is a different day out there.

Just as the fish didn't bite well on Tuesday, they did just the opposite on Wednesday.

We made our way some 40 miles out and stopped on the first spot and never had to mave all day. I was fishing with Matt Creighton from Over Land Park, KS and Randy Vaughn from my hometown of Lexington,NC.

I don't know how many grouper they caught with a lot being too small, but they got their limit of Gags, and rather nice ones at that and a nice Scamp.

Also with those they had Black Bass, Triggerfish, Grey Snapper, American Red Snapper,Vermillion Snapper,Joltheads, and yes, Sharks. always sharks!!

The bite was on all day long. I have never fished an area before that had so many American Red Snappers as this hole has.

With the legal size being 20 inches we only caught one keeper. We had several more close, but not close enough. I lost count somewhere around 28. Hopefully with proper management and respect for the resource, this fish will make a comeback in our area. I am going to do my part to bring them back now that I have found some!!

The fall bite is doing good at this time, so come on down and catch some fish!! You don't have to charter a boat, They have been catching some fish on the piers I have been told.

But if you do want to charter a boat, we now have a much bigger boat and my rates are still the same, just what you have come to expect from us here at "YEAH RIGHT CHARTERS"!!!

Till next time, Blessings to all!!!!

The word on the inshore bite today was not good. The full Moon and East winds along with the cloudy water has taken its toll.

We figured the Gulf Stream might be a little better, and it was, but just a little.

I was fishing with Michael Ragland and his wife Melissa today. They are from Reidsville,NC.

Just as we got to the 100/400, a Mahi-Mahi around 15 lbs. jumped all over a black and purple Boone Feather. This was one of Melissa's birthday presents.

Michael, you got a gal there who is happy to get trolling lures as birthday presents, I sure do hope you know how many guys are jealous of you!!!

We thought that today was going to be filled with bunches of fish, but it wasn't to be. We trolled for a while and did get a very hard knock down on the starboard outrigger. We don't know what it was, but we do know it hit  the black and purple Blue Water Candy Lures JAG 3 like a big fish.

We finally gave up on the stream bite and tried bottom fishing. Here too the East wind and full moon was doing its damage with ripping currents and lock jawed fish.

Melissa caught a nice rasp and Michael had a bite from a fish that bit like a grouper. That too we don't know for sure, but it liked to took the rod out of the boat, just like a grouper can do.

The weather looks better for the next few days, hopefully, the fishing (catching) will get better as well. Time will tell!!

Still a day fishing is better that a day at work. Till next time, God Bless All!!

While some of us are stuck here in windy/rainy Southport, NC, William Deal and his family of Asheville and Oak Island,NC are enjoying a five year anniversary trip to Cabo San Lucas.

He emailed me these pic's and said the fishing was great down there with Roosterfish, Billfish, and Yellowfin Tuna.

He hooked up with Marlin and after a 25 minute fight he was cut off by another fish. Like William said, "that stunk"!!

Over the years William has become a great friend to me and my family and I can't think of anyone else that is more deserving of a trip like this for their anniversary.

Only problem I can see is that I don't see his wife holding up a fish, sometimes that's not a good sign. William, how do the couches sleep in Cabo,LOL!!!

Also, William reminded me that when times are tough we all can turn to "Phillipians 4:13" which reads "for I can do everything God asks me to with the help of Christ who gives me the strength and power"

Amen William, with Christ's strength and power laid upon me, I now have a much bigger and better boat for my fisherman, and as long as fuel prices don't go crazy, I won't have to increase my rates.

Just goes to prove "Our God is an awesome God, just ask and you shall recieve"

Thanks for sharing the pic's and scripture with us and have a great time!!!! God Bless You and your Family!!!!

Wednesday, October 1st

Captain Butch had a half day trip today with John Cornwell, Raleigh, NC, Hugh, William, Julia Cornwell and Michael Bell of Chester, SC. They were on a half day charter and Capt Butch did his best to find fish for them. They found quite a few at the Shark Hole but most were to small. You really have to be able to move around sometimes and get further offshore to find a lot of keeper fish and 1/2 day is not long enough.

As soon as Capt Butch gets the Yeah Right II ready he will put more reports on. Please be patient, he's really working hard right now to get everything going.

Wanted to let you know the Kings are definitely on the beach. Ocean Crest pier has had several landed this week and I think one of them was 30+. With the king mackeral tournament this weekend a lot of fish should be brought to the dock. Oh and the weather looks perfect. Offshore the fall fishing is going strong.

Hope to see you soon, 'cause the weather at the beach is just about perfect right now.

Went on a 1/2 day trip with Dennis,Gary, Nick and Suzye Colay from Rural Hall,NC.

As I reported yesterday, the Spanish Mackeral can be stubborn this time of year.

We had them jumping at the boat, running bait out of the water, all the classic signs you want to see, but they were reluctant to bite our lures.

Gary is pictured with the biggest one we caught today, a good three pounder.

You King Mackeral fisherman rejoice!!! The kings are on the beach.

The past two days have had a good bite going on and the bait has been in the area of Yaupon Pier.

I saw several Kings sky today as we were trolling for Spanish. They seemed to be from Lockwood Folly Inlet (where I seen the biggest one sky with a mullet in her mouth) all the way to the Cape Fear.

The winds are blowing, but as long as they stay out of the North the beach should stay calm, and the beach is as far as you need to go now to catch some Kings.

As for the Spanish Mackeral, they are there as well, just have to hit them when they want to bite!!!!

 Till next time, God Bless!!!!

Ran a fishing trip today with Tim Mock and his kids Trisha, Tamara, Tyler, Troy, and Travis from Lynchburg, VA. we were on the heels of Tropical Storm Hanna and it had made an impact on the fishing.

All the normal "rocks" that usually hold fish were bare today so we had to keep working farther offshore today to deeper water until we found the fish.

 How far offshore you ask?

Well when we found the fish I punched the nearest waypoints on the GPS and I was only 1.75 miles from a bottom ledge I have saved that is in the area of the Steeples, and that's in the Gulfstream.

Sometimes you have to do what you have to do, and doing this today made for a good ending to a great trip that didn't look good in the beginning as far as catching fish was concerned.

Hopefully, we will be back in full action before much longer!!

Till next time, God Bless You All!!!!

It was nice to be back for a day of fishing. It was really extra special being able to spend the day with the guys from the Fayetteville,NC area.

They were Tim Holland, Gregory Potts, Howard Moore, from Spring Lake,NC  and Eugene McPhaul from Cameron,NC.

I was afraid that after being out of service for a month that I may have lost contact with the fish offshore,"naw" I had everyone begging me to come to the dock before their fishing time was up!!!

They said that they were so tired of catching fish that they could not catch another one.

That's what I like to hear!! That way I know I have done my job for the day!!!

These guys caught Black Bass, Sharks, Amber Jacks, Silver Snappers, Grey Snappers, Vermillion Snappers,Triggerfish, King Mackeral, White Porgys, Scamp Grouper, Kelp Bass, and Strawberry Grouper.

Dang, I got tired just writing them all down!!!

It was great to be back for a day, now, let me explain this!!!

The Devil is working hard on me lately, but he does not realize that he or nothing else can cause me to loose my faith in God.

And, with God on my side, nothing or no body is going to stop me, and even though I haven't needed to go to the bank lately with all the cancelled trips, you can take the first sentence to the bank every day!!!

The new power head ran better than when the engine was new. Now, I guess you are wondering why I am not fishing today.

A little $60.00 part broke yesterday in the lower unit, and even though I could have left it in forward gear and run it that way, it wouldn't be safe, and safety is our #1 goal.

I will not take you out fishing if it's not safe, your money or fish are not worth taking ANY CHANCE !!!!

So, hopefully, this part will be more available than the power head was and if so or not, it's just another part of being in business and depending on mechanical man made machines.

  THEY ARE GOING TO BREAK!!!!!!!!

If you haven't experienced these problems yet, don't worry, keep fishing and sooner or later you will!!

Just keep your faith and keep moving forward, don't let the Devil get you down!!!

Till next time, soon I hope, God Bless You All!!!!

We went fishing Friday on an evening  trip with Richard, katey, Jacob, and Lisa Roe and with them was R.D. Herdman all from Wheelersburg,Ohio.

We went out about 10 miles to some cleaner water where the Spanish Mackeral were holding.

Only problem was the Barracuda's were holding there as well and were hungry.

But we still managed to get a few away from the hungry cuda's and into the boat.

There were a lot of juvenile King Mackeral being caught out there as well, so be sure to look for the two colors on the Spanish Mackeral's dorsal fin, a positive way to identify it's a Spanish.

Till next time, God Bless!!!

Today we were fishing with Rick, Kristen, Cassie, and Richard Buxter with them was Jennifer Drover and they were from  Monroeville,PA.

I advised them the winds and seas were to rough to go into the ocean but they still wanted to go fishin' so we trolled the rip for Spanish Mackeral.

The bite was slow but we caught a few.

Pictured is Kristen with her first Spanish Mackeral, Cassie is holding her first ribbon fish, Richard caught a Lady fish and a Spanish, and Jennifer got her first Spanish and a Lady fish as well.

It just goes to show that it's not always about how much you catch, but the quality time you spend with friends and family.

Cassie and Jennifer even did a duet for us about the fish, I tried to get a video of that but was too far away at the helm, and it didn't pick up the song over the engine noise.

Enjoyed it guys, you all were a pleasure to fish with!!!

Today we were fishing with Alexander, Isaiah, Sammy, Michael, John W., and John T. Smith from Hamlin,WV.

We ran out to the 440 where there was some cleaner water for the Spanish Mackeral and the bite was slow but there were some being caught.

Alexander and Sammy caught their first ever Spanish Mackeral today.

Isaiah got an Atlantic Sharpnose shark and Alexander also got a nice Bull Shark.

The seas were kicked up some and the fishing is still sorta tough on the inside.

It means a lot right now about "being at the right spot at the right time" on the inshore bite.

We worked on out to the Shark Hole and the 18 Mile rock with several other boats, no one reported any king mackeral bites and I never marked the first sign of any bait at those places.

Pogys have been around and to the west of the hothole and at the Grey Condos on our end and some have been at Lockwood inlet.

 Till next time, Blessings!!!

Today we were fishing with Bill, Russell,Jim,William, Aaron, and Tony Arno from Stokesdale,NC and Minnesoto.

It was rough on our beach and the Spanish Mackeral bite has been happening for the past few days up at Carolina Beach.

With the SW winds, the beach up at Carolina would be calm so we headed up there.

The beach was calm just as expected, but, after a few phone calls I was informed that the Spanish Mackeral bite that was going on was not going on today.

Well, there was a few shrimp boats out up at Carolina, the sharks had to be biting better that they were yesterday.

At least we did catch one today.

William Arno was the "rod man" when this Atlantic Sharpnose" took the bait. His helpers were Aaron and Tony Arno. The threesome fought the beast to the boat where they had their picture taken with their catch, great job guys!!!

We only had a few more bites but no takers and not a Spanish Mackeral in sight!!

Yeah the reports are not pretty, but, "It is what it is"!!!

Scott Blevins, a good friend and great fisherman has been doing real good on the Speckled Trout lately with limit catches.

Don't know what he's using for bait or where he's fishing, but if he says he's catching them, then he's catching them!!!

The Spanish Mackeral were reported to be around five miles off the beach today and the King Mackeral are in the ten mile range.

The water is slowly clearing up and as soon as it does the fish should be back on the beach again.

There are some pogys slowly getting back on the beach, and the fish will have to follow them, eventually!!!

It's tough running 1/2 day trips these days with these gas guzzling boats we have to have to go offshore, and getting to the fish when they are offshore like they are now is very expensive!!

And a lot of you know I still go to the fish and sometimes go "in the hole" just to get you fish when I have to do it.

And I will continue when I have to and the conditions warrant!!

But the past two days it has been too rough to get offshore even if I wanted to go, it's not worth the risk!!!

Got another "close in" trip tomorrow, I sure hope the pieces of this puzzle starts falling into place better soon.

I can handle the physical part of this charter fishing, but this mental part of the fish not biting and trying to figure out how to make one bite is much worse than the labor part has ever been.

Combine the two, and it can be a nightmare, but everyone knows that when you get to "fish" everyday, you got it made, "YEAH RIGHT"!!!!!

 Till next time, God Bless!!!

Today we left South Harbour Marina with Billy Brown, Doc Holloway, Jessie Holloway, Charles Williams, Charles Brannon, and Robert Johnson from Charlotte, NC.

It was hot today the winds were still and the ocean looked like glass, almost spooky!!

We started off like "gang busters" then the sharks found our baits and we had to move to "try" to get away from them.

Every where we went it was the same, start off good then here comes the sharks and when they arrived you could not even get your baits to the bottom to catch a bottom fish.

But we kept moving, in fact, I ran a circle of nearly 30 miles to get the fish we had. Sometimes you got to do what you got to do to get fish!!!

Although the sharks dominated the fishing holes today, we still ended the day with Grey Snappers, American Red Snapper, Black Bass, Almaco Jacks, Silver Snappers, Joltheads, Calico Bass, Triggerfish, Vermillion Snappers, Grouper, Mahi- Mahi, and yes, sharks, all we could legally keep and all you ever wanted to catch, and then some!!!!

I think if the sharks had not been on a rampage today, we would have done again what we did last time we fished with these guys and that is we would have limited out before lunch, but not today, the sharks made it nearly impossible to fish for bottom fish but we were persistant and we prevailed!!!!

Also, the "PABCO Power Buoy" was a very real asset today with the slick seas, I was able to get my anchor coarse with ease using the buoy while marking the fish holding structure.

If you bottom fish you need to get one, get yours by calling Mike at (843)665-5613, tell him Capt Butch sent you and save $50.00 per marker.

Till next time, God Bless Everyone!!!!

Today was one of those fun fishing trips. Let me explain!!

I was fishing with Don and Debbie Wyatt, with them was Eddie Steev and Dianne Reeder, all from Lexington,NC which just happens to be my hometown.

Now as to what I meant by "fun fishing trip"!!

They just wanted to catch something, didn't matter what, they were out of the office away from the phone and if a fish bit, that would just be an added bonus.

We set out on the beach to catch dinner with a few Spanish Mackeral.

As we were fishing, the conversation came up about Dianne wanting to catch a big fish, a "blue whale" as she put it.

Don't know about a "blue whale" but I did have an idea.

We ran just west of Yaupon pier and netted a few pogys and headed to the wreck just off the horse shoe.

Everyone got a turn at a big fish today, and most were successful although the fish won a couple battles by either breaking the line, biting the wire, or diving into the wreck.

But Debbie got a nice 'cuda while Don and Dianne got a great fight out of some AJ's and were able to boat them. Eddie had bad luck with the AJ's breaking off and coming un-hooked, but still got a nice 'cuda.

But the real big story today was the fact that Dianne, her first time offshore fishing, got her "Blue Whale" today, it just looks like a huge African Pompano and she single handedly fought the fish all the way to the boat, and what a battle it was on King Mackeral Tackle!!!!

And I had a very nice suprise and dinner this evening with my wife as we enjoyed the "world famous Lexington Bar-B-Que" these guys brought us. Thanks so much, you were very kind, and it was great fishing with you guys today!!!

Till next time, Blessings to all!!!!

Today we decided to stay at the dock, just too many thunder storms offshore and the Spanish Mackeral haven't been doing that well on the beach so we opted for a better day.

Yesterday's offshore trip was scheduled to be run with the guys from DC but we cancelled due to rough conditions, and rough off shore it was!!!

It wasn't pretty on the beach, but fishable so we ran a 1/2 day trip with Mike and Nate Nemic, Mike Smith from Boiling Spring Lakes and also Ken Skilton from Mentor, Ohio.

We started off trolling for Spanish Mackeral but the Spanish bite was terrible.

All the boats trolling were reporting pitiful catches for this time of year. Like one fish to no fish for everyone.

Buster, on the SEA HAWK III, who in my opinion is the best Spanish Mackeral fisherman on the East Coast, only reported 14 fish from the west end of the Island. 14 fish yesterday was quite a catch!!!!!

With the reports we were getting we decided to go shark fishing. This too started off slow.

Most everyone else gave up and went in early or just didn't get the bite to happen.

We kept moving and trying different areas and bait sizes. That's a tip, I have seen times when they want a big bait and when they want smaller baits.

The smaller baits, about golf ball size was the answer.

It didn't take long with the small bait until Mike Smith was hooked up. It was a Black Tip around 90 to 100 pounds.

But before we could get it to boat side to get a picture it made a charge towards the back of the boat and the line hit the prop on the motor, Shark won that battle!!!!

Next up was Nate Nemec, didn't take long for another  Black Tip  around 85 pounds to pounce on the small offering.

It was a hard fight but Nate did everything perfectly and before long he was in the boat doing a photo shoot.

We saved the best for last!!!

With the winds and seas picking up, I decided to make one more drift, it was a smart move.

Ken Skilton was up next so I moved over to some deeper water, set the lines, and just as I set the second line the first rod doubled over, it was a "monster"!!!

Ken was locked into the fishing fight of his life. This was a big shark.

He worked the fish like a master fisherman, even though for a long time the only one that was gaining any line was the shark.

Ken finally got the shark up to the boat close enough that we got to see him.

Black Tip, Nine+ feet at least!!!! I reached for the camera and the fish just swam away as the hook pulled free.

It was a well orchestrated battle between man and beast, the man proved that he could "tame the beast" to the point of identifying his quarry, and the hook pulling out to free such a beast was a just and honorable ending to a great battle.

Both man and beast came out victorious in this battle!!!!

Till next time, God Bless You All!!!!!

We finally got a calm enough day to head offshore. Supposed to blow back up again tomorrow so I have cancelled my offshore trip for Wednesday.

Today we were fishing with Ronnie Harvey, and his two son's Ron and David, also with them was Javan O'Neill all are from Dunbar,WV.

We made the run to the high 360's today so that the South winds would be behind us this evening and also because this is a great place to bottom fish.

The plan all worked out as good as you could expect. The fish that wanted to bite was a little hard to locate this morning but we kept looking.

The 5th rock I checked proved to be just what we were looking for, we couldn't keep the lines in the water for a little while, fish were flying in the boat from all directions.

It was like that all day, bite good here, no bites there!!

David Harvey caught his first King Mackeral today and we ended the day with a good haul.

We limited out on Reef Complex species that included Grey Snappers, Joltheads, Triggerfish, Golden Tile Fish, we also had Grouper, Silver Snapper, Vermillion Snapper, Sharks, and King Mackeral.

Ronnie, you guys be careful on the way home and we hope to see you again next year!!!!

Today I had a offshore trip with some guys that have become regulars with us here at "Yeah Right Charters".

They are Pat Kee and his two sons Ben and Hayden also Jim Parrish and his son Kyle and their friend Andy Minsker, all are from Charleston,WVA.

I called this morning and cancelled the trip!!

I hated to do it, but you have to play the cards you are dealt when it comes to the ocean, and you need to know when to play your hand and when to fold your hand.

It was 3.9' every 5 seconds at the tower buoy. That's just too rough to have any fun.

Well, about 7:30AM the phone rang and the voice on the other end asked, "can we just go out on the beach and fish"

My reply to that was "yes, but after the passing of this tropical storm, that's probably all we will do is fish", the reply to that was, let's go anyway, so we did a 1/2 day on the beach today.

It looked just like I figured it would. Water dirty, void of bait, and still a little rough on the beach.

I set out to do my best. Called another boat and asked about the Spanish Mackeral Fishing, reply was "caught 3 yesterday, nothing today".

Oh well, that rules that out. The boats that did venture out to the 390/390, Shark Hole, 15 Mile Rock, etc; reported not having a single bite, this don't look good, pressure to find some fish mounting!!!!

Only option left, and that was no guarantee, Shark Fishing!!

Lucky for us there was one shrimp boat out and the action was decent.

Got a keeper Black Tip around 80 to 90 pounds and a few more in the 60 to 80 pound range which we released.

We got there a little late and when the shrimp boat left to return to the dock, he took the bite with him, we got only one more bite after that and he didn't hook up.

Never seen the first sign of a Spanish Mackeral today. Didn't see but two terns all day long.

But things will be on the mend very soon and the bite will be back in full force.

Have another full day tomorrow, if we get out there will let you know what happens right here!!!

Till next time, God Bless You All!!!!

After last years weather of no storms and rain and being able to just go fishing this time last year whenever you wanted to go has made it tough to re-adjust this year to all the winds and rain we are having.

But, Thank God we are getting some rain, I definately am not complaining, and hope we get even more, barring hurricanes, we don't need those!!!

It was too rough to get off the beach so we just ran a half day on the beach.

The stiff East winds we had made the fishing and catching very tough, Even though I had my doubts I didn't stop searching and (Thanks to the Captain on the boat "Fishing Shack" who steered us in the right direction) we did manage to find some nice Spanish Mackeral and we finished the day with a couple sharks.

In the last report I was kidding about my websites getting fisher people from "mars" and I quess that was expecting a little much.

But today's trip shows that it's really a small world. I thought when I placed my website in areas like Australia, Scotland, Ireland, United Kingdom, France, etc; that I was wasting my time, maybe not!!

Today we were fishing with Laurie and Doug Jordan and their two kids Gabby and Ben from Waybridge, Surrey United Kingdom.

It was a total thrill for me to be able to show our overseas neighbors a little sample of the fishing here in the USA.

I just wish we would have had better weather to fish in, but regardless of the weather, we all had a good time and we made some memories for all to take back to England to share with friends.

Capt Chris and I too have some great memories now of some new "Yeah Right Fishing Family Members" from overseas!!!

You guys were great, it just goes to prove that no matter where you are from, people that fish all share a love that makes us all bond from all over the world to enjoy something together, and that makes it all a great and wonderful thing!!!!

Laurie, Doug, Gabby, Ben, and the little one, May God Bless you all and see you safely home!!!

Till next time, Blessings to all!!!!

I must say that when I set out to build a charter business, I never thought I would build it to this point.

I spend quite a bit each year doing shows, seminars, and just general advertising and marketing my service.

Today I finally realized that all my marketing efforts have paid off, big time!!!

You will see what I mean here in this description: Today I was fishing with Lou Duke from St. James,NC and with him was Greg White, Garrett White, Tess White, Lauren Slivosky, and Elliott Woodword from MARS, yes, I said Mars!!!!

Well, maybe my efforts haven't been quite that good, but, they are from Mars,PA.

We were going offshore today for Grouper but about 4 miles out the NE winds and the fact that it wasn't 100% safe and I had some "first timers" on board, I decided to abort the trip.

We went from there for some King Mackeral  at a better and calmer location like 15 mile rock.

Every boat today was talking about the non bite that had emerged today after a good bite just the day before at the 15, 18, and Shark Hole Areas.

It was like the "dead sea" out there today. Yesterday's bite was just a memory now.

Everyday on the ocean is a different and unique day with its own characteristics.

The seas and winds kept building and we had trolled for nearly 1 1/2 hours without the first bite so we decided to go back on the beach and do some shark fishing.

As I was heading in I ran up on birds working about a 1/2 mile to the west of Light House Rock #2. I thought finally, some signs of life, I can now redeem myself, finally I won't look like I didn't have a clue as to what I was doing, yessss!! and they were big spanish too!!!

Spanish Mackeral were jumping everywhere, 75 to 100+ birds were fighting over bait fish run to the surface by the ravageing spanish mackeral, they were diving into each other, Spanish Mackeral were jumping over one another, it was a beautiful sight to see in an otherwise dead sea.

I turned to my group and said look at all the Spanish Mackeral!!! They are everywhere!!!!

That's when the "BIG BLOW" came!!!!!

Todays crew didn't care for spanish mackeral fishing, so with tears in my eyes, and holding back a total break down, while at the same time hiding a severe case of the "shakes",  I kept going, muttering to myself, "why me"??

With the NE winds, the beach at Southport was real calm.

We put the lines in and soon we had a hook up with an Atlantic Sharp Nose which was soon brought to boat side by Garrett White.

Since this was a legal fish to keep and good table fare, they decided to keep it for dinner.

Next Shark on was fought to the boat by Elliott Woodword.

This shark was a little bigger but not the right species or length to be legal so we took his picture and put him back.

We thought the shark bite was going to be on, two lines in and two sharks pretty fast.

Don't try to figure out the fishing, you'll go nuts!!!!

The winds shifted to the East and a already dead sea now looked like the "Burmuda Triangle" no signs of life anywhere, not even a bird!!

We did get 3 more runs from sharks, pulled the drags good but no hook ups, remember, it's fishing not catching!!!

The other boats were still reporting not a fish or bite in sight, so at that tme it was 12 noon so we called it a day knowing full well there will be better days in the future.

It wasnt the best catching trip but the kids weathered the rough water well so now they can be pretty sure that when the winds permit, they will be ready for an offshore trip.

The bait today was gone from the Southport beaches. The only bait found this morning (that I know of) was at Shallote Inlet on the west side.

Seems like here lately things start to get good then all of a sudden it goes to pot.

Surely it will get back to normal before long, if it doesn't soon, all us Charter Captains here in Southport are going to either be on Valium or in the nut house, or both!!!!

And to answer your question as to why I would choose to put a report like this on here is simple, We strive to be the best and bring you reports you can believe in!!!

You wouldn't know if I went fishing today if I didn't tell you.

If I told you we caught a pile of fish but forgot the camera, so I don't have any pictures, you wouldn't know that was a lie either!!

But I would know it was a lie!!!

And if I didn't tell you and tell you the truth then you would not know how the fishin'  actually was right now.

And if I lied about the fishing and didn't tell you the way it really was, then that wouldn't say much about me as well, no, I'm wrong, that would say a lot about me, just not very good!!

You have come to expect the truth from my reports, and that's what you will always get here

"It is what it is" and I truly hope I have earned your respect and trust!!!!

Till next time, God Bless You All!!!!
                                                                    Fish On!!!

Today we were fishing offshore with Steve Baker and his son Sam, Bryan Baker and his son Robert, and with them was their brother David Baker and his fiance' Karine Lefebure all from Kings Mountain,NC.

The bottom bite started off good today and slowed as the day progressed and the winds shifted to the NE and the current picked up.

But before the winds and current all but shut everything down, we managed  two fish boxes full of fish.

We had quite a smorgasborg of fish today.

Some big sharks were hooked up today and the AJ's were biting very good as well.

We ended the day with Grey Snappers, Triggerfish, Almaco Jacks, B-Liners, Triple tails, Jolt Heads, Scamp Grouper, Silver Snappers, Amber Jacks, Strawberry Groupers, Squirrell fish, ring tails, and a load of sharks in which all were released but one legal sized that was kept for the grill.

I overheard some of todays fishermen talking about where their arms were hurting, that's what I like to hear.

That way I know I have done my job that day!!

Till next time, God Bless You All!!!

Today the winds and storms of last week were forgotten!!

We were fishing with Ken, Courtney, and Nick Mariani, with them was Ben Homan all from Charleston, WVA.

We were doing a 1/2 day trip today and after talking to Buster on the Sea Hawk III, I had high hopes of catching some Spanish Mackeral.

He said they did real good on them yesterday, but today was a different day and the signs didn't look good!!!

There was not the first sign of them anywhere, no diving white terns, no fish jumping, nothing.

There is plenty of bait (Pogys) on the beach though, hope they stay a while now, we will see!!!

There was a good tide line about half way from the river to Yaupon Reef, and this is a good place to hold Spanish and bait, but not today.

Some others were talking about the shark fishing and saying that they were biting good but todays group said they didn't want any sharks.

They said they had already been on one of those trips and that wasn't for them.

So, after an hour of hunting for the spanish and with no results, I did the only thing I could do!!!

On days like this, when you are in the customer service business such as I am, you have to sometimes forget about the cost of operating and make your customers happy if you possibly can.

Of coarse you can't head offshore all the time on a 1/2 day trip due to the rediculous fuel mileage these boats get.

If I did I wouldn't be in business very long, but you must remember that this is a fishing trip and you have to try your best not to make it just an expensive boat ride, if you can!!

Sometimes you have to make exceptions when the fish are not close in and do what you have to do, and that's just what I did!!

  I headed offshore!!!

I told them I would rather have them fish for two hours where the fish were than to fish for four hours where there was nothing!!!

We left out for the Shark Hole, It was the only right thing to do today, and it was the right move to get some fish!!

All they wanted was enough fish for dinner this evening and each one got a king mackeral and Nick even caught a 3 to 4 pound Spanish Mackeral.

We had several runs that never hooked up and lost a couple of kings at the boat and everyone had a good time!!

When we were getting ready to head in, Ben hooked up with an Atlantic Sharp Nose Sharp, the only shark we caught today, finally!!!!

Got reports that the offshore bottom bite was real good over the weekend and the weather was beautiful.

Capt Ricky Holden who operates the "Reely Miss-behavin'" told me today that where he was at Saturday was absoulutely covered with Cobia!!!

He said he had never seen that many before, big schools all around the boat!!

Please don't ask where he was at, I won't reveal his spot, just as I wouldn't tell yours if you sent a report!!! It's called "Professional Courtesy"!!!!!!

But when you are offshore bottom fishing or trolling, keep an eye on the surrounding water, especially the "prop wash"you may be suprised at what shows up looking at you!!!

Manning Outen, from Raleigh, NC on the "'Bout Time II" called me Sunday and told the King bite was hot this weekend where he was at.

He said he was trying to bottom fish and boats were hooking up kings all around him.

Finally he couldn't stand it anymore and went to king fishing as well!!!

The water is clearing up nice and the fishing is getting better every day. If you can make it, now's the time to catch a fish or two, or three, or four, you get the idea!!

 Till next time, God Bless!!

This morning I met Robert and Sean Faulkner from Copley,Ohio, Scott Faulkner from Cary,NC and Ryan Faulkner from Cincinnatti,Ohio.

I stopped just off BHI this morning and asked if they wanted to call it quits now or head on.

I knew the "YEAH RIGHT" could handle it fine, I just wasn't sure about us.

The decision was made to go on, I'll have to give credit where it's due. I never heard the first complaint all day, these guys are pretty tough!!!!

Today was a little sporty to say the least. The weather man this morning reported that the winds would relax as the day went.

YEAH RIGHT, it got down right nasty this evening!! Easy 6 to 8 feet crossing the shoals and 4 to 5 every where else!!

The winds were blowing a good 20+ MPH from the SW. Not a good wind for Southport if it's over 10 MPH!!!

We were fishing in the tower area and I can't ever remember the current running as hard as it did today.

This made bottom fishing extremely tough, all but impossible... It got to running so hard that we moved up into shallow water (40 feet) and we could not get to the bottom with two (2) 16 ounce weights.

Yeah, 2 pounds of weight would almost float on top!!!!!

I tried stopping the boat on top of the fish and used both engines in reverse to hold the boat, but by the time I stopped and went from foreward to reverse I would be 3 to 5 tenths off the fish.

I think today was the toughest day I have ever tried to bottom fish, as I said earlier, I have never seen the current this strong!!!!

The King Mackeral were biting some around the South Forty and we caught two Mahi-Mahi and a King Mackeral on the lite line, but these guys were more interested in bottom fish.

I did all I could to get some fish and we did get some despite the terrible conditions I had to work with. Perseverance pays off again!!!

I am not sure if perserverance is the right word here. With todays conditions the old saying "I'd rather be lucky than good any day" sorta comes to mind!!!

Scott caught the King Mackeral we got on the lite line today, and Sean caught a Nurse Shark today around 50 lbs.

Robert  thought he had hooked the south end of a north bound VW but it turned out to be a nice Amber Jack. Now he knows why they are called "reef donkeys"

The rest of the catch was comprised of Grey Snappers, Silver Snappers, Joltheads, Calico Bass, Mahi-Mahi, Sharks, and Black Bass.

As I said this morning before we ever left the Marina that I figured today would be an adventure, if I got nothing else right today, that part I nailed down perfectly!!!

Till next time, God Bless You All!!!!!

The SW winds still have the beach water dirty and this makes catching fish on those near shore trips next to impossible.

We were fishing today with David Wharton and his two sons Harrison and Colin from Johnson City, TN. With them was Edwin Burnett from South Harbour Marina here in Southport,NC.

Talked with another captain today who fished the beach today all day and only caught one Spanish Mackeral and his shark fishing excursion was actually worse than ours.

The beach bite has got to get better!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Harrison Wharton had a Spanish Mackeral but we used it for bait to catch some sharks after we figured that this might be a better bet to catch something.

Well, the shark bite was better than the Spanish bite, but that wasn't saying much either.

Edwin caught the biggest shark of  the day, a Black Tip that was not big enough to keep but it would not give up the fight and we had a time getting a picture of him and keeping everyone safe from all those teeth.

We did get two Atlantic Sharp Nose sharks for the grill that night.

A little butter and lemon juice basting on the grill with some grilled shrimp on the side and a fresh green salad, it doesn't get any better.

Just be sure if you are going to keep a shark to "field dress" it just like you would do a deer, and pack it good in ice and it will be good to eat.

Just throw it in the fish box on ice and it will make for a stinking, strong fish that will turn you and your appetite off!!!

Yes, it was a slow bite but everyone had a day to rejuvinate with friends and a day away from the office on a cooler than normal day in summer with a breeze to keep it nice.

It's not always about what or how many fish you catch but the quality time you spend with family and friends, and if you catch a few fish, that's ok too.

Till next time, Blessings to all!!!!

Today we were fishing with William and Will Snellgrove from Charlotte,NC, Bill Snellgrove from Columbia,SC and Josh Threatt from Lancaster,SC.

Todays trip was originally scheduled for the first of the week but we were having a terrible SW blow then.

I figured moving it to later in the week would be better, and the weather was, but the remaining dirty water on the beach from all the winds made for nearly impossible conditions to get fish on a 1/2 day trip.

With the dirty water on the beach, I tossed the fact that what I was fixing to do was more than likely going to cost me more in fuel than what I charge for a 1/2 day trip.

So be it, my job is to try to find you fish to catch and I knew that the dirty water on the beach was not the place so I headed offshore.

The fish were there offshore and a few were being caught here and there. For some reason, the guys that are going to the trouble to catch live baits are finding out that frozen baits have been producing more bites lately.

Two weeks ago, I know of two anglers, one had live bait and and couldn't get a bite at the Light House Rocks while the other fisherman with frozen cigar minnows couldn't get all his lines in the water.

I don't know why, that's why it's called fishing and not catching!!!

But from the amount of boats that were there Friday July 4th, and the reported hookup's, it was slow at best.

We did get Will Snellgrove his first king Mackeral and had a couple baits bit off at the hook.

On the way in I ran across a school of birds working a bait pod that Spanish Mackeral had up on top. The Spanish were jumping but I guess the water was to dirty for them to see the spoons.

However, we did have one Spanish commit suicide and we got Josh Threatt his first ever Spanish Mackeral.

I have run some type business nearly all my life and I have learned that when you are in business, you can't always make a profit.

Sometimes you have to sacrifice to keep your customers happy, or at least do all you can to make them happy.

With $4+ gas and 1/2 mpg motors, somedays we go in "the hole" trying to make that happen, but at days end at least I know I have tried and I don't have to hold my head quite as low if I know I did the best I could do with the time I had to do it in!!

It was a tough day of catching. Seems like the 1/2 day trips get harder every year to produce fish consistently, but we tried our best with the sea conditions we had to work with.

Yes, it's Saturday and yes we had to cancel todays trip. The relentless SW winds this year have been a nightmare.

It doesn't look any better tomorrow. In fact as soon as I finish all the reports to the news papers and magazines this evening, I am going to call tomorrows party and will most likely have to cancel that one as well.

And yes, we have a storm brewing off the coast of Africa that's expected to become a hurricane.

No, I'm not a negative person, it's just that I don't want to tell you to come on down the weather looks great, when I know it is not.

I won't tell you the fish are "biting like bulldog's" when I know they are not!! With the cost of everything these days, if we all don't work together and try to fish smarter, the economy may very well do PETA's work for them!!!

If you don't want the truth about the weather and the fishing then you are on the wrong fishing website!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What you get here is, no hypes, no sales pitch, no false promises, just the truth, and yes, the truth hurts sometimes, but "IT IS WHAT IT IS" and the way it is is what you get here!!!

I truly hope you can appreciate that!!!!

  Till next time, God Bless!!!

Today we were fishing with long time friends Dale and Ella Foster from Lexington,NC. As far as we know, we just share the same last name but from different origins.

They fish with us every year and Capt Chris always tries to get off work so he can go with us. He made the trip again this year.

We started off on the east side and worked our way around to the SW. The fish were there but were not aggresively feeding so we had to stay on the move picking up one here and a few there.

By the end of the day the tactics payed off as we had a load of fish to show for our efforts. Remember, if one thing doesn't work, keep experimenting until you put together a plan.

Also remember that some days, nothing might not work great, but just keep pecking and at days end you will have something for your efforts.

Even if you can't put the fish bite together, you will still have a day of fishing and away from all the stress that's in the world today.

Unless you are the Captain and it's your job to find fish that will bite, then you are stressed to the end!!!

Dale and Ella, as always we were very happy to see you again. I keep trying to get to Lexington long enough to go crappie fishing with ya'll on High Rock Lake or just have dinner one evening.

It's amazing how fast the years go by now and how little time you have left to get things done.

Capt Chris and I went to High Rock Lake, I'm thinking about 4 years ago now, maybe longer and put in about a dozen crappie brush piles in deep water for fishing in the winter and we still haven't been able to fish them.

I am going to do my best to show Dale where they are this winter. Hopefully I can since I am toying with the idea of cutting back on some of my shows and seminars this year.

We had a great day visiting and fishing and a good day of catching as well. We ended the day with Grey Snappers, B-Liners, Grouper,Silver Snapper, King Mackeral, Black Bass, Almaco Jacks, Triggerfish, Jolt Heads, and sharks...

You guys tell family we all said hi!!! Be safe and leave a few crappies in the lake for seed.

Hope to see ya'll again soon. May God Bless You All!!!

Today was one of those weather days we as fishermen dream about.

Cooler temps, lower humidity, and calm seas. Plus the fish were biting!!!!

We were fishing today with Bryan Detandt from Greenville,SC Ray Wiggins and Justin Miller from Fountain Inn,SC Trevor Castlebury from Donald,SC, and Darrell Koon from Grey Court,SC

It was a busy day all day with the bottom fish in the high 360's. The lite line only produced one King Mackeral and one Mahi-Mahi, but we didn't really mind because there wasn't much time to work a lite line anyway.

We ended the day with several limits of different species and complex species. We had Joltheads, B-Liners, Black Bass, Lizard fish, Grey Snappers, Triggerfish, Barracuda, Amber Jacks, Almaco Jacks, Grouper, Mahi-Mahi, Ringtails, Squirrell Fish, Sharks, King Mackeral and Tripletails.

I didn't see any Spanish Mackeral on the way out this morning or on the way back in, but I did hear another Captain say he had seen some jumping about 5 miles out of Lockwood Folly inlet.

The water is cleaning up fast and I would expect things to be back on schedule real soon...

Will let you know what I see and do tomorrow. Will be back offshore again. May go east, not sure yet, only thing, if I go south again I will have that following sea on the way in tomorrow evening and that is so nice after a long day of  fishing.

What ever I do, you can bet it will be a great day, I am fishing with great friend's Dale Foster (no kin) and his wife Ella and to top that off, Capt Chris is going to help me tomorrow.

Yep, I'm going to be in heaven on earth once again tomorrow!!

Till next time, God Bless Everyone!!!

Today I had two 1/2 day trips. But due to the past four days blow, I figured to move the mornings Spanish Mackeral trip to another date and give the seas inshore time to settle and clear up.

From the reports I heard this morning it was the right move to make, that way I didn't take my fishermen on an expensive boat ride.

And a boat ride was all it would have amounted to in the dirty water on the beach, Spanish Mackeral can't handle all that sand in their gills, so knowing that, I wasn't going to go and just take their money knowing that the chance to catch some Spanish Mackeral would be nearly impossible this morning.

The beach water is real dirty and the boats that were spanish mackeral fishing reported not a bite. Things will clear up soon and the fishing will resume on the beach as before the blow.

Since we were Shark fishing the second trip we went ahead and ran that trip. Sharks don't particularly like dirty water, but they can tolerate it and will hang around and bite.

I was fishing with Anita Alexander from Asheboro,NC and her son Austin was with us from Farmington, KY.

Austin put a legal keeper Black Tip in the boat and caught another one as big and maybe bigger. But before we could get a picture of that one he managed to escape.

The offshore bottom bite is still as good as before. And the King Mackeral are biting offshore in the cleaner water.

I would keep a look out while heading offshore, the Spanish Mackeral have backed out to the cleaner water somewhere.

A sharp eye will find them jumping out there in the cleaner water while they are feeding.

We are going to try to head offshore tomorrow in pursuit of the bottom dwellers, will let you know for sure what's happening right here!!! If I spot any Spanish on the way out I'll let you know where!!

  Till next time, God Bless!!!!

I would have given just about anything yesterday to have seen the schools of Spanish Mackeral I seen this morning when I was heading offshore.

About three miles from the #10 Buoy on a 173 degree heading, they were jumping everywhere.

But we didn't stop today. We were heading out to the 350's with Chris Hybarger and his two sons, Cole and Garrett.

Don't let the size of these little guys fool you, they can hang with the best. In fact, I do believe that most of the 250 + pounds of fish we had were brought on board by Cole and Garrett. They did let dad (Chris) catch a few!!!

A lot of "first's" were done on the "Yeah Right" today. Look at Garrett's big grouper he hauled up from the deep, that is a challenge for a grown up, but Garrett got the job done perfectly!!!

Cole, not to be out done, had his share of big fish on board today as well. Cole was fighting a big King Mackeral when the fight went slack. He then reeled in about a 10 lb. head from a King that looked like it would go in the 40's.

We don't know what eat the rest, but we had a Tiger Shark around the boat that was 7 to 8 feet long, plus we had a Hammer Head shark circle the boat that was a good 12 to 15 feet long.

We ended the day with a limit for all on the Reef Complex species that included Grey Snapper, Triggerfish, Black Bass,Joltheads,Almaco Jacks, Amber  Jacks, Strawberry Grouper,Ring Tails, King Mackeral, Silver Snapper, Red Grouper, Vermillion Snapper, and sharks.

Thanks guys for fishing with us, hope you had a great time, I know I did!!!

  Till next time, Blessings!!!

It comes back to the old addage of "what a difference a day can make"

Yesterday we were fishing with Kelley Stidham from St. James,NC and her two good friends Chelsea Schmidt from Charlotte,NC and Jenny Benitz from Greensboro,NC.

We were just to close on the heels of that terrible blow over the weekend and things were still stirred up and the fish didn't want to do much biting.

But Kelley still got herself a NC Citation Red Drum that morning on a diamond jig.. We caught a Spanish Mackeral or two, got some sharks and a King Mackeral.

The girls had a great time and I know Capt Chris had a great time. We all ended the day with a late lunch at the "Provision Company" where we talked about the days fishing and fun.

We are going to have open bids for Capt Chris's mating job next year. The highest bidder can help fill in for him occasionally, but whether you get one of these days like he just had will be between you and him!!!

Kelley, Chelsea, and Jenny you guys were great fun, I haven't seen Capt Chris smile like he did yesterday in a long time!!!

Till next time, Kelley, keep up the good work, I'm proud of you, I knew all along you could do it, Chelsea and Jenny, ya'll can do it to if you set your mind to it!!! May God Bless you three girls always!!!!

We were headed offshore today with Tim Greene, Kevin Stanley, Eldon Hinegardner, Jerry Fredell, Olin Huffman, from Marganton,NC and Mike Greene from Lenoir,NC.

We found the fish in the 350's area to be biting pretty good. The highlite of the morning was a big Hog Nose Snapper and a big Almaco Jack that gave a great fight all the way to the boat!!

On the lite line the first King Mackeral we had was big enough that she bit through the #6 wire. We almost got her into gaff range before the wire parted and estimated her in the 30's.

The next king was just above "snake" barely but then after that the current started backing up into the wind and that made running a lite line impossible for us as we anchor to bottom fish.

We tried drifting so we could run the lite line but then everyone was staying tangled so we scraped that idea.

We ended the day with the cart 3/4 full of fish for the crew, that's around 250 to 300 lbs. of fish. That should make a nice fish fry for everyone!!

We all had a beautiful day even though the winds and seas picked up in the evening making the ride home a little "sporty" in the 3 to 5 foot seas, but the "old Mako" made short work of them as she challenged each and every one at a crusing speed of 30 knots and a dry ride!!!

We didn't go out today, the weather was unstable and it looked like trouble was in the mix. As I have said so many times in the past, if you are not sure go with your first instincts!!

As it would happen, strong storms developed on the coast. Reports of at least two boats capsizing and one drowing so far. Guy's, it's a grim reminder that a fish is not worth the chance.

Just think what would have happened if these storms had taken an offshore path instead of going up the beach.

Our thoughts and prayers go to the victims and their familys!!

As for fishing tomorrow, I haven't decided yet. But you can bet that if there is the slightest chance of bad weather, we won't have a report on the fishing because I won't have my fishermen out there unless I know it's safe!!!

Till next time, stay safe, fish smart, and God Bless!!!

This morning I met Doug Hunt and his two boys August and Casey from Simpsonville,SC and Daniel Greene and his two boys Van and Coby from Greer, SC at the Bald Head Island dock for a 1/2 day of fishing.

Reports of the spanish mackeral bite was that they had not recovered  from the front that passed through two days ago so I headed offshore.

If they were not on the beach they could have only gone South, North would have put them on the beach and why would they go east or west, they might as well stay where they are as to go that way.

My premonition paid off!!!! About 8 miles out there they were!! They looked like silvery "popcorn" jumping everywhere.

One of the guys said "well I'll be, Capt. you found 'em",  I say "better to be lucky than good any day!!!"

We caught a couple limits rather quick and then went Shark fishing. Even after using some for bait we still had plenty of Spanish Mackeral left for everyone the eat.

First Shark line in and Casey Hunt soon found himself hooked up with a very stout Black Tip Shark that gave him quite a workout!!

It was legal size and they wanted some shark steaks for the grill so we retained one for that.

The next rod went off and Doug found himself one on one with a shark that was very powerful and relentless!!!

The battle went on for some time!!! Too bad it didn't get loose. That way we could have conjured up "fish tales" of the monster shark that got away.

But bringing it to boat side it was a Black Tip around 100+ pounds hooked in the tail. That's a fight not for the weak and meek!!!

All the boys did great and had a good time. These young men know how to catch a fish!!!

Tyler, I think my mate this year, didn't call or show up again today so Casey Hunt earned a tip as I tipped him for helping me with the duties on the boat today of hand lining in the Spanish Mackeral and setting the lines back out. Thanks Casey, you did a great job helping out!!

Doug and Daniel, cherish every moment you have with those fine boys, the day will come all to soon that it will all be just a memory, I know all to well from experience. Till next time, God Bless You All!!!!

This morning I picked up Jeff and Wayne Street from Ravenwood,W VA. With them was Chris Higgins from Raleigh,NC and Zachary Smith from Vicksburg, MS.

The front that went through yesterday with the storms and cooling trend had a negative effect on the bite today.

The hot Spanish Mackeral we had going on had cooled down and you had to work to get them today.

We caught a few then used them up shark fishing. The shark bite had been slowed by the front as well. But some, just like the Spanish Mackeral, were willing to bite.

We mostly found Atlantic Sharp nose but there was a smaller (40+ lb.) black tip caught that was short of the legal size and Jeff had a big shark hooked up but he pulled the hook when he made a hard run at the boat.

The working terns and schools of bait and Spanish we had a few days ago and the pogy's we had on the beach front has dissappeared. Fishermen were looking for bait today from below Holden Beach all the way to the Cape Fear and none could be found anywhere.

Hopefully when the pressure stabilizes again things will get back to the way they were last week. Only time will tell!!!

Charter fishing is kinda like a lottery ticket, you select a date to go and hope weather and conditions will be in your favor.

Sometimes it is, sometimes it isin't, but if you don't book a trip it will never be in your favor!!!

We had a beautiful day and spent it fishing with some great people, and yeah, we even caught some fish and we were thankful for what we had!!!

Till next time, Blessings to all!!!!

No, I didn't forget the weekend reports. I don't have any.

Saturday was turned into a maintenance/service day for the "Yeah Right" and Sunday I didn't think it was safe to take my fishermen out in the stormy weather, So I called it off.

From what I have heard I didn't miss anything!!

But today was a different story. We ran two 1/2 day trips today. The first was with Zach Ritenour, Justin Ritenour, Rocky Ritenour, and Brandy Putman from Fort Valley,VA.

This mornings hot Spanish Mackeral bite was at  Holden Beach west of the inlet. However we got there too late and the bite was over.

So I made my way back to the Hot Hole and this is where we put 35 Spanish Mackeral in the boat before we quit and went Shark Fishing.

The Spanish bite was so fast a few times I just sat and watched in amazement that no one got a hook or two in them!!

But the Shark bite was slow today. We had several runs with no hook up's but we did manage two Atlantic Sharp Nose.

Zach and Justin both caught a shark and everyone had their hands full with the Spanish Mackeral!!!

The second trip was with good friends and long time "Yeah Right" fishermen Martin, Mark, and Bierson Shaw from Greenville,NC

The tide had started to fall when we got back out on our second trip but the Spanish Mackeral were still in a feeding freenzy.

Immediately, we started having bird rigs hit, planers tripped, and weighted rigs bent over.

Again, Spanish Mackeral were flying in the boat from all sides.

It didn't take long before we had almost limited out but the tide now was spreading things out and the bite slowed but we persisted and did limit out with 45 Spanish Mackeral.

From that point we hoped that the evening shark bite might be better than earlier in the day, but it wasn't.

Martin did get one Atlantic Sharp Nose and we missed several more hits.

By this time the SW winds had picked up and the seas were getting rough so we headed to the hill to clean the fish and talk about memories of some past fishing trips.

It's always special when you get the chance to fish again with friends you have made by fishing together and today was one of those special days!!!!

  Till next time, God Bless!!!

Today we were fishing with Ronald Sunderland, Deb Sunderland, Joe Baxter from Raeford,NC, Becky Bahama, Shannon Martin, and Rodney Martin from Cameron,NC

We headed offshore to the 300+ line to fish some live bottom areas in around 90 to 100 feet of water.

The first stop was slow so we pulled anchor and moved to the west about 5 miles and at this stop we never moved all day.

The action was nearly non stop all day. Even when the tide dropped out I kept adjusting the anchor rope and kept the bite alive.

We all were give out at time to head back. We ended the day with Black Bass, B-Liners, Joltheads, Silver Snappers, Grey Snappers, Triggerfish, Squirrell Fish, Mahi- Mahi, African Pompano, Almaco Jacks, Grouper, and of course, Sharks.

I know you have many Charter Boats to choose from to take you fishing, but I want you to know that I really do appreciate you choosing "Yeah Right Charters" to fish with.

We will continue to try hard to earn your trust and respect and we have been asked to continue with the BBB again this year.

Thanks to you all!!!!! Till next time Blessings to everyone!!!!!!

Today we were fishing with Richard Thomas, Ryan Shrum, Marty Shrum, and Joe Prater all from Lincolnton,NC.

We were on a 1/2 day trip and after a little searching we found the Spanish Mackeral willing to bite.

Captain Chris was helping me today so those that have fished with us know that when Capt Chris is with me things go like a well oiled machine!!

Today was no different. The lines were placed perfectly so as not to tangle when we would turn and all the little things Capt Chris knows how to do to make a trip successful was enjoyed by all today!!!

And with just a little instruction from Capt/1st Mate Chris,  Ryan joined Capt Chris and the Spanish Mackeral were coming over the gunnels with regular frequency.

Son it is truly one of the greatest moments in my life now when you can join us on the boat.

It  just fills me with so many great past memories of our earlier fishing days that I miss more than life itself!!!!

We did our best today around AR425 and at the Water Tower at Holden Beach.

They seemed to prefer #2 Planers and gold 00 Clark spoons trolled a little slower than usual around 5.5 to 6 knots.

Till next time, just remember that "God loves you so much that he gave his only begotten Son for your sins so that you shall have the opportunity to live in Heaven for eternity just by believeing in Him"!!!!

P.S. Check the "GUESTBOOK" Jim has given a report on the Speckled Trout he had the other day!! Thanks Jim for letting us know. We appreciate guys like you!!!!!

Things didn't exactly go in our favor today. Ever had one of those days that it all goes wrong?

If you haven't you have not been fishing very long or you are on borrowed time!!

We were fishing today with Joseph Conners from Wilmington,NC, Kyle Davis from Virginia Beach, VA., and Dameon Dixon from Willow Spring,NC

First stop we hooked up with a big AJ and it dove head first into the wreck and busted off!!

Second hook up was another big fish and this time it threw the hook.

Third hook up was on a King Mackeral rig and this fish spit the hook.

On the way out, the Spanish Mackeral were jumping everywhere and the sharks were on fire just east of the river channel.

The radio talk about all the Spanish and sharks was more than we could handle so we headed for the hill to get in on the action.

Well, when we arrived the Spanish Bite had slowed to a crawl and the Shark bite was over.

We finally caught enough Spanish to have bait to try for some bigger sharks and we caught a couple of those.

You had to be at the right place at the right time, and today we were at the wrong place at the wrong time, although we all like to be a "hero" all the time and some say they are.

Even though 99.9% of the time we put the puzzle together.

But I am just a Captain and not God and sometimes I don't get all the pieces put together at the right times.

Hey, I'm only human and I tell you the way it actually is and I want to Thank all the people that have recently come up to me letting me know that they love our website and appreciate the truth about the fishing. Isn't that really the way it should be????

You'll never know how much that means to me!!

Till next time, God Bless You All!!!

Today we were fishing with Ramsey Frazer from Homer,Ohio, Jay Bonnette, Tony Belcher, Matt Belcher, Judy Belcher, and Tammy Belcher from Little Hocking,Ohio.

We fished for Spanish Mackeral until we got enough to go Shark fishing.

The Spanish were jumping again west of Yaupon Reef and here is where we quickly got enough for bait.

The "hot hole" was the "hot spot" for todays sharks.

Talked to Jim Bickerstaff today at the Wildlife Ramp. He said the Speckled Trout were biting good on live shrimp.

I know it's true, he showed me some nice Trout he had caught today.

Makes me want to take a break from ocean fishing and hit the creeks with a bucket of live shrimp.

If you get the chance, take a kid fishing!!! Till next time, God Bless you all!!!

Today we were celebrating Michael Mewherter's Birthday ( who is from Fayetteville,NC) by doing a 1/2 day of Spanish Mackeral fishing.

With Michael were Harry and Chance Mewherter from Clear Lake, South Dakota and Jamie and Trey Mewherter from Bowdle, South Dakota.

Michael is a military career man with 21 years to his credit. If you see him wish him a Happy Birthday and Thank him for all the sacrifices he has made for us all to keep our country free.

The seas were a little sporty this morning on the beach but we persevered and finally found the Spanish Mackeral just west of Yaupon Reef.

A little bit of info you may be interested in!!!, we were bringing a Spanish mackeral to the boat a good sized one close to two pounds..

All of a sudden a silver missle shot through the prop wash and all that was left was the head of the Spanish Mackeral.

I won't try to estimate how big the King Mackeral was, but if I were fishing a two day tournament and caught her on the first day, I would just sit out the second day and see if she could be beat!!!

Take a look at the Spanish Mackeral Trey and Chance are holding in the pictures, they don't have a lot of those in SD but I am told they are quite the fishermen when it comes to those big walleyes!!!

Till next time, God Bless Everyone!!!!

Today we were fishing with an all local crew. They were Kevin and Ralph Richheimer, Pete Deluca, Mitch Loaz, and Michael Vantassel from Southport,NC

We started in the low 300's today and worked to the Tower and a little to the South.

We trolled a little, bottom fished a little, anchored a little and lite lined a little. Nothing seemed to work great today, but we kept "pecking" away at it and ended the day with a good catch.

We ended the day with Black Bass, Sharks, Kelp Bass, Grouper, Mahi-Mahi, King Mackeral, Vermillion Snapper (B-Liners), Ring Tails, Grey Snapper, Triggerfish, and Silver Snapper.

We had some sharks hooked up that the guys couldn't even turn, much less stop.

And there are a few big grouper laughing tonight about the way they stole our baits and hooks.

But that's what it's all about!!!!

Till next time Blessings to all!!!

The fish were not feeding as aggressively today as they were yesterday.

Good thing, if they eat all the time like they did yesterday, it wouldn't be long before your boat would be just a big top water bait to them!!

But they still bit today, you just had to look a little harder for them.

We were fishing today with Bobby Craig,SR from Rock Hill,SC, Bobby Craig,JR from Lancaster,SC, Ricky Cotton from Waxhaw,NC, Al Berry from York,SC, Shannon Preslar from Monroe,NC and Paul Haymaker from Wingate,NC.

We went to the 350's area and there were plenty of fish there.

We ended the day with Black Bass, Triggerfish, Grey Snapper, King Mackeral, Sharks, Bonito, Mahi-Mahi, and an American Red Snapper.

The weather man totally missed it today, so if you didn't make it offshore today, don't feel too bad, there will be better days for you to go!!

Till next time, God Bless everyone!!!

Last August I did a bottom fishing seminar for the "Triad NCW Chapter" and donated a 1/2 day trip to be raffled off for the proceeds to go to a worthy cause.

Well today we ran that trip, but the guys paid the difference and we made it a full day trip bottom fishing.

I think the truth is they wanted to see if all the stuff I was telling them really works.

I'll let the pictures answer that one!!!

I was fishing today with Capt Mike Kilgarifl who runs "RED HAWK CHARTERS" from Kernersville,NC, Capt Dewy Edwards who is a Striper Guide on Kerr Lake and he is from Clarksville,VA, with them were Mike Cope and Scott Davis both from Lexington,NC.

The first stop to the last stop was pretty much action today. We ended the day with both boxes full of fish and some tired fishermen.

We had Black Bass, Grey Snappers, (Sharks, of course), Vermillion Snappers, Pinkies, Triggerfish, King Mackeral, Mahi-Mahi, and some right respectful groupers.

It was another great day on the water with some great people and again, we caught some fish as well!!!

Till next time, May God Bless You All!!!

You got to love it when a plan comes together, I know I sure do!!!

Well today we were fishing with Mark Mann from Macon,GA with him were great friends Custer and Pam Mayo from Smyrna,GA.

The plan was to head to Carolina Beach since we had a 10 to 15 mph SW wind. You see, the main land blocks the SW winds at Carolina Beach and it's not as rough up there.

We were going to troll and catch enough Spanish Mackeral to use for bait so that everyone could catch a big fish like a big shark.

So far the plan is going great, we got the Spanish Mackeral for bait, then it happened, there was not a shrimp boat in sight.

Carolina Beach and no shrimp boats, that tells you the fuel situation is starting to take its toll!!!

We tried drifting at the inlet and picked up a small Atlantic Sharpnose, but these guys wanted a big fish. A BIG SHARK!!!!

I was not planning on having to run back down the river with a falling tide and a SW wind, that is no good!!!

As luck would have it, I looked at my tide watch and the tide was 1/2 way on the fall, that's really no good!!!!

I heard "Dickie" on the radio who operates the charter Boat "GET REEL" I called him and he told me the Shrimp Boats were back off Southport again today like they were yesterday.

Well, I had to go back anyway so I chose to run the ocean and cross the shoals at Bald Head Island, it was bound to be better than the river, and I believe  it was the right choice.

We made it to the Shrimp Boats and it wasn't but just a few minutes until Mark had his wish come true. He was victorious in getting a nice Black Tip Shark to the boat.

He wanted to keep one for the grill, but this one was short of the 54 inch minimum length to be legal. We took his picture and let him go.

It was only a short time until we were doubled up with two sharks. Mark and Custer were on the reels again.

Got some more pictures but one was too short and the other one pulled the hooks.

We put the baits back out and this time Mark hooked up with a real Beast. This shark was huge, much more than the 80 lb. test line could handle.

Next line in Mark was hooked up with a shark that just about did him in.

The battle went on and on. I haven't ever seen a Black Tip Shark of 70 inches fight this long and hard.

He would not quit, but Mark wouldn't quit either and tonight he is trying some shark steaks on the grill for dinner.

A just reward for the sore muscles he is going to have in his arms in the morning!!!

I was amazed at Mark, he is a true testiment as to what you can do when you Thank God for what you have and not dwell on what you don't have!!!

Mark is visually impaired, but do not think of him as handicapped, let me tell you this, He handles a Fishing Rod Better Than some I have seen that can see perfectly well..

Mark, Thank You for reminding me not to take things for granted.

And for reminding me to Thank God for what I have and for what I am about to recieve.

Mark, I want you to know that you are my Hero and I know God will Bless you well in the future!!

Custer and Pam, it was Great meeting you as well, you all were just Great people!!!

Till next time, God Bless Everyone!!!

We were to go offshore this morning, but the SW winds had different plans for us so we stayed inshore where it was as rough!!

Today's trip was a special one for me, I'll explain..

We were fishing with Fred Martin and Tim and Crystal Cash from Craigsville,VA. with them were Stephanie King and Susan Lockhart from Leasburg,NC.

Fred was the winner of this trip after Susan sent in a picture of a 65 lb. catfish that he caught that beat out other great catches to win the top prize at a contest that "Yeah Right Charters", "Bass & Saltwater Fishing Expo", and "Radio Station 94.7 QDR" put on last winter.

We started out Spanish Mackeral Fishing and then went Shark Fishing.

Everyone got to land several Spanish Mackeral and when we got all those we wanted we went after the Sharks, and everyone got a chance or two at the sharks as well.

Some found the fight these "well oiled" predators produce was just a little more than they had bargained for.

We kept a 6 foot Black Tip for the grill to go along with the Spanish Mackeral.

Tim Cash caught the first shark then after that they became pretty much, "here you take it a while" fishing as they were just too much fight for only one to endure for long at a time!!

It was another great trip with some more great fisherpeople. I truly meet the best people in my line of work and I pray everyday that the "oil barons" don't put us all out of work!!!

Will be heading offshore tomorrow if the winds let up... Check back to see what happens!!!

Till next time, God Bless You All!!!!

Today was about as beautiful as you will ever see it on the ocean.

Two feet every 8 seconds, now that's my kind of seas!!!

We were fishing a short day today with Meredith Moore and her dad Tom. Also with them was Joel Sax.

These guys were from the Ground Hog Capital of Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania.

We started at the Raritan in hopes of a King Mackeral or a Mahi-Mahi but we were soon inundated with AJ's.

They were everywhere and jumping on the trolled cigar minnows we were using.

I'll make this report short and simple, Meredith caught the first fish, the biggest fish, and the most fish, end of story!!!

The first AJ she caught had us all figuring for a trip to the certified scales with a monster AJ. The battle went on for over an hour.

Meredith would gain a foot or two and the AJ would take back ten!!!

When it was finally brought to boat side, our visions of a monster was dashed to just a big one, you see, it was foul hooked in the side at the pectorial fin, and an AJ hooked there has some more kind of pulling power and pulling leverage!!

We finally left there and went to the bottom where the crew picked up some nice Black Bass, Triggerfish, B-Liners, and Grey Snappers.

We didn't have long to fish as they had to get back to attend an evening birthday party so at 1:00 we headed back to the dock where Tyler and I quickly cleaned their catch for them so they could get back to Holdan Beach and not be late for the party.

For you King Mackeral fisherman, the radio talk today was that the King Mackeral were not available.

A couple good fishermen I know reported no king bites at all.

Did hear of a few, but very few being caught in the 15 mile rock area.

Tomorrow is another short day, we will see what we can come up with and put it here for you to see!!!

Till next time, may God Bless you all!!!!!

Still a bit to rough offshore this morning. Going to try the Horse shoe area tomorrow on a 3/4 trip.

Looks like we are headed to the stream on Thursday now.

Guess things work out for a reason. Wifes car bit the dust this morning and I spent all day at the car dealership.

Wife was happy at the end of the day, she got to drive her new car home!!

Will let you know how we do, looks like tomorrow will be a go!!!

  No report for the weekend!!!

I chose not to head out in this weekends winds and rough seas just to beat up everyone.

I talked to another captain and to save face I won't call any names, but he told me that he came off a wave saturday and busted the windshield on his 26' center console and jarred him all the way to his ear lobes. That type stuff is just not any fun!!!!

Another Captain told me it was 3' to 4' on the  beach, that's no fun either, sounds like I made the right choice to stay on the hill.

Was headed to the Gulfstream this morning but the Tower Buoy was saying 3.6' every 5 seconds. That's not any fun as well!!!

It's hard to believe the Tower Buoy when it is dead calm on land, but experience has taught me not to second guess it. It's an entirely different world out there!!

Yeah, I know, it  was most likely from the storms that were out there this morning, and most likely when they are gone it won't be that bad, but the forecast is for the winds to shift to the NE and I do not want to be 55 to 60 miles offshore with a NE wind.

There is nothing quite like being tired from fishing all day then having to take a NE wind head on for 60 miles. Suddenly, your fishing trip takes a  turn to miserable, that's no fun!!

Back to the "if I ain't sure, I ain't going".., and why go if it's not going to be a pleasurable trip you will want to remember....

Just remember this and you may live to play with your grandchildren,

"There are Old Captains and there are Bold Captains, but there are No Old Bold Captains"!!!

Not a bad saying to live by if you fish offshore!!

Anyway, tomorrow looks better and we might make it to the stream tomorrow if it lays out some.

If we do get to go, I'll have the results right here!!!  Till next time, God Bless!!!

What a day we had on the water today. I was fishing with Rusty Napier, Ken Bartlett, Robbie Carelock, and Don Keziah from Monroe, NC.

I don't care what you do or where you go with these guys, you are going to have a blast.

We decided to head to the Gulfstream and fish a little then move back in some and go to the bottom.

We started off at the 100/400 where the stream water is a blue as you will ever see it!!

Here we hooked up with a nice Bull Dolphin on a Hoo dressed in a purple and flash 1 ounce Bluewater Candy Lures Skirt.

We redeployed the bait and got another nice cow on the same lure. So we immediately changed another skirt up to the same Bluewater Candy Lure.

We got a few more "knock downs" but no hook up until a Barracuda hit the diving lure. These 'cudas  can do a number on a lure!!!

At this point, they made the decision to go bottom fishing. We made a run some 12 miles to a spot I found last year close to the stream but had not fished it yet.

Well, it is now a permanent number in my "log book".

Upon arriving and getting anchored up, the action was fast and furious the rest of the evening.

These guys were hauling in Groupers, Vermillion Snappers, Silver Snappers, Kelp Bass, Grey Snappers, Ringtails, Triple Tails, and some of the biggest, meanest sharks we have caught in a while.

We kept one legal size Bull Shark for some shark steaks for the grill. If you get invited over to Rob's house for a shark steak dinner, please be sure to bring some Grey Paupon!!

I've got to fill you in on this, it's too good not to!!

As we were coming into the Marina yesterday evening, we passed a yacht at the transient dock.

There were folks on the top deck as we idled by, (you older guys such as myself will appreciate this), Rob stood up and out of the blue asked, "Pardon me, but would you have any "Grey Paupon"

That was the perfect closing to a perfect day, WE HAD A BALL, and caught some fish too!!!

Till next time, may God Bless you all!!!

We were supposed to be headed to the Gulf Stream today; however, Mother Nature had a different idea for us today.  The 15-20 knot winds out of the NE kept us contained to the beach Spanish Mackerel and Shark fishing today.

We were joined by Phil Poling and his son, Gunnar Poling, who are pictured below with the 2 larger sharks of the day, along with Bai Carpenter, Bill Foy, and Ashley Smith.

The day began with a search for the Spanish and once again they were discovered between Ocean Crest Pier and Lockwood's Folly.  However the front that was moving through, making it feel like it should be snowing in May?!  had "knocked them in the head" and the bite was rather slow.

Finally the sun began to poke through the clouds and the Spanish decided to begin to bite a little more frequently and we ended up with enough to make for a meal and a good amount of shark bait.

Next we decided to head to shark waters because of the reports that they were feeding.  We put the lines in the water and soon found that the Atlantic Sharpnose sharks were there.

There were several more hits that peeled off the drag but never got a hook in them!  Finally we ended up hooking and releasing the two larger aforementioned sharks that are pictured below.

We're booked for a Gulf Stream trip again tomorrow, hopefully these winds will decide to calm some!

  Til next time, FISH ON!
Capt. Chris, Capt. Butch and Bodie the fish dog!

We headed out to the Gulfstream today with Gordon Willis, Justin Willis, Sheena Christiansen, from Lynch Station,VA and Jessica Dowell from Leland,NC.

There were several other boats from our area there as well and we were all looking for the Mahi-Mahi, Wahoo, and Tuna.

Every one was having a slow morning, but the fish were biting randomly. All picked up a t least a few Mahi and a few Wahoo.

The big news was the hook up of a couple of Blue Marlin, never did hear if one was landed.

I called on the radio to see who won the battle but never got a response, but they reported hooking up!!

We got a couple of Mahi-Mahi in the boat. We had multiple hits and knock downs but some how as they can so masterfully do, they missed the hooks.

The hot skirts for us today (at least to draw strikes) were the Bluewater Candy Lures "Hair & Mylar Witches" in Blue & White and Blue & Black.

We even had a Manns Stretch Thirty in pink color running beside the boat and it was hit hard enough to pull drag from the Penn 50 TW and still missed a hookup.

Another Black and Purple Bonito lure run on a Wahoo Bomb had mutiple hits leaving the tell tale signs of teeth cuts and gashes all over it from Wahoo teeth, these too missed hooking up.

My luck has got to get better!!!!!!

On the way back in we stopped by the 18 Fantom Wreck and found a lot of bottom fish but the current was so strong there the fish wouldn't bite. Rowdy pulled up while we were there and he found the same results.

We left there and went to thne Navy wreck. Here we found the current fishable and the fish more willing to bite.

There were multitudes of 11 15/16 Black Bass but there were  some grown ones as well.

By this time it was getting late and everyone was give out. With enough fish in the box, we headed for South Harbour Marina where we met up with Phil to clean todays catch.

The fishing today was great, the comradre was even greater!!! The catching, well, we hoped for better but it could have been worse and we were thankful for what we had!!

Till next time, may God Bless everyone!!!

Fish On!!!

First let's say a big thank you to our service  men and women of the past and present.

Without them we would not have a country where you can go fishing or anything else.

Thanks folks for all you have done and still do, and thank you to all the families that have sacrificed members of their families to keep us free.

May God bless you all and God Bless America!!

Fishing has been exactly that lately. One day it's red hot the next luke warm.

Today we had a half day on the beach with Leena and Wess Miller from Sanford,NC where we caught some spanish and sharks.

Heard of  spanish being taken from the hot hole to the pier on Holden Beach.

We had hoped to have the same shark bite we had the day before but it wasn't quite as good today.

Leena still managed to get two Atlantic Sharp nose sharks to the boat where we took their picture and then released them for another day.

The only big bite managed to break the line on the take.

We had another great day on the water with great people and even had some fish thrown in as well.

How could you ever beat that!!! Till next time, be thankful for our men and women of our Armed Forces and may God Bless everyone!!!

Fish On!!!

Today we were fishing with Tres Tatum from Kernersville,NC, Herschell Redding from Rural hall,NC, Kevin Greene from Greensboro,NC Christina Durham from Cary,NC and David and Christen Hall from Carolina beach,NC.

We started off Spanish Mackeral fishing where we found the bite to be good.

Several times on the mackeral tree rig we brought in three Spanish Mackeral at a time.

After we got a good supply for several fresh fish dinners we then went for bigger game.

We hoped to hook up with some sharks for a big fight, our wishes were granted.

The first line in was met by a huge shark that rolled and threw the hook but that was soon forgotten as every one was able to battle with a good sized shark today.

The clincher for the day was David's battle with a big Black Tip Shark that before we got him to the boat upped the annie by breaking a Penn Senator Rod therefore making it a "reel man" and a "rod man" type event.

With David on the reel and Kevin on the rod, the duo finally brought the 56" shark to boat side.

It was quite a good day of fishing with some Great guys and gals and the catching wasn't bad either!!!

Till next time, may God Bless!!!

I can think of many excuses as to why the fish didn't bite much today but they would be just speculation.

The fish only know why for sure, but for sure the bite from the Tower area and to the east was slow today.

Just ask Josh Allison from Lincolnton,NC who happened to catch his first King Mackeral today, and also Mike Witmore from Monroe,NC, he caught both the grouper, Jack Atwell, Ken Helms, and Darren Broome from Monroe,NC were just like me, scratching our heads as to why the fish wouldn't bite today!!

We were on fish all day. Marking them real well on some of the rocks that have produced very well in the past.

I don't know, be it full moon, fronts, winds, etc; whatever caused it I hope it moves on in a hurry.

A lot of boats were reporting the same slow results all over the place.

We finished the day up trolling for Kings about an hour around the Tower and we never got a bite!!

The only exception I know about was the Gulfstream. Get at the right break or place and the bite was pretty good. Several Wahoo, mahi, and Blackfin Tuna were taken from the stream today.

One boat reported fishing for King Mackeral at the Tower and only had three fish for the entire day.

The water is a lot cleaner and bluer at the Tower than it was today on the East side. East side was a little dirty and the current was showing the full moon tug!!

Things will get better and in a day or two we will have forgotten about the slow bite of today and it will be back to fishing "catching" as usual!!!

I want to take a moment and talk a little about the rising  fuel prices.

With the ever rising cost of fishing equipment, fuel, and operating a charter boat I can now show you one reason why I operate my charter business the way I do.

I try to look ahead in all I do and this business is no different than any other.

It takes a strong commitment and total dedication to your customers to gain the respect that draws attention of Mfg's in the fishing/tackle business.

This we have acheived through hard work, honesty, seminars, Magazine Articles, donations of free trips to worthwhile charities and organizations, fishing shows, fishing schools,  and total dedication to all involved with "Yeah Right Charters", therefore being inducted into the BBB.

Everything has the dreaded "trickle down effect" but this one is not dreaded and so the commitment of my sponsors / product support teams have made it possible for you to benefit!!

Now, you ask, how does this affect me?

Well with the commitment from our sponsors and product support, this helps us lower our over all operating cost.

Instead of looking at this as more profit to us, I am passing on the benefits and savings to you as probably the only charter business that will NOT be raising my prices right now.

I had announced earlier that I would be increasing my prices, but due to some "heavy hitters" in the sponsorship / product support line  coming aboard, I can put that on hold for right now.

  Why do we do this???

It's for you, to help lighten the burden of all the cost to go fishing.

The sponsors reduce or eliminate my cost for equipment, therefore reducing my overall cost to operate!!

And when I can operate for less, it's going to cost you less!!!

Why would I do this for you and not take the extra profits for myself?

Because without you, there would be no "Yeah Right Charters"

So, if you get the chance we would be honored to fish with you and show you that we are different.

We are not "money driven" we love what we do!!

And hopefully I have made it a little less painful for right now for you to get out and enjoy a day on the high seas where you too can say "FISH ON"!!!!

God Bless you all, even if we don't go fishing, I still hope to see you soon!!!

Fish On!!!

The winds finally let up enough that we were able to head offshore after some Grouper/Bottomfish.

I was blessed to have Capt Chris aboard today. Not only is he a great son, but he is an excellent captain and supurb 1st mate.

Today we were fishing with Bill Edger, Andy Edger, Kirk Rankin, and Brian Hall from Colton's Point in St. Mary's County, Maryland.

We were rewarded with a good catch of Grouper, Black Bass, Sharks, Vermillion Snappers, Silver Snappers, Grey Snappers, King Mackeral, and Almaco Jacks.

The water was dirty on the way out. We were headed to the east and at around 22 miles out it started cleaning up.

A couple miles east of the Cucumber this morning were several schools of Spanish Mackeral jumping and feeding in minnows.

We didn't stop and fish, but I wanted to let you know where I had seen some Spanish since the water on the beach is so dirty!!

It's late and I am headed out again tomorrow. Will have another update here after tomorrows trip so come on back and see what's happening!!!

Sure hope you get a chance to go fishing over the holiday weekend, everyone needs a break once in a while. May God Bless you all!!!

After all the winds this week and storms last night, I am giving it yet today to settle out offshore!!

I hope that tomorrow we can get back to business offshore in calmer and safer conditions!!

I need to get back to work, I am starting to get lazy, I have actually started getting use to doing nothing, and have found out that I am also pretty good at it, but it sure is boring!!!

The weekend is looking good at this point for a change so just maybe the weather patterns are going to finally relax some and become a little more calm, lets hope so!!!

If seas calm tomorrow and we get out I am as excited as a kid in a candy store.

Not because I will be going offshore, but because Capt Chris is off work tomorrow and he is planning on helping me tomorrow.

I will be in my own little world of past memories tomorrow and will be making future memories, this is what keeps me going at this stage of my life!!!

So check back tomorrow night, I hope to have something new on here about the fishing. Hope the winds haven't blown them all to England!!!

Also, I want to take a moment and welcome our newest sponsor to the "Yeah Right Charters" family!!

Welcome to "PURE FISHING" and "BERKLEY GULP SALTWATER "

Thanks to Daniel and "PURE FISHING" whos product lines include, "BERKLEY", "ABU GARCIA", "STREN", "SPIDERWIRE", "MITCHELL", "FENWICK", "BERKLEY 7 STRAND" "SHAKESPEARE", "PENN" "PFLUGER" "ALL STAR GRAPHITE RODS","XTOOLS", and "JOHNSON".

Thank You for your trust in our Charter Service and as we do all our sponsor/product support teams we will represent your company and products proud!!!

Come fish with the best "PURE FISHING" and "YEAH RIGHT CHARTERS"!!!

"PURE FISHING" is a "JARDEN" corporation.

I hope everyone has a Blessed day!!!!!

This report is late and I apologise for that but I will explain why here now.

This past weekend was tough fishing with the "gale force winds" and all the Small Craft warnings and advisories.

When you are a Charter Captain you DO NOT take fishermen offshore in those conditions, PERIOD!!!

If you do, then you need to be in a different profession before you kill someone!!!

There is NO FISH worth risking anyone's life over.

If you choose to go offshore in those conditions, that's your business, but please go by yourself, don't take other people with you!!!

Now, the reason I am late with this report!!!

I wanted to make sure that the fishing was tough and the conditions were as bad as I thought they were and it was not just me.

I surveyed quite a few fishermen and the results were the same as mine!!! Very tough fishing and catching!!

The bite was terrible all the way to the Tower.

Yes, we finally got out to the Tower later Saturday afternoon after things calmed a little from that morning of 6 foot seas.

All the cold fronts and strong SW winds has the water dirty just about everywhere and has really slowed the bite.

I talked to some fishermen at the the marina and the boat ramp and all reported the same slow, rough, and tough conditions that we experienced this weekend.

But as Willie Spivey, Brandon King, Oscar Bullins, and Billy Spivey from Seagrove,NC said Saturday, it still beats working!!!

It's too bad Alex Spivey couldn't make it to help out with all the sharks. I understand he will be with us maybe in June!!!

The shark action was nothing short of spectacular. I don't think I have ever had as many sharks around the boat as we had Saturday evening.

The bottom bite (according to the commercial boats) was better, but still not great, on out in the 350's and those areas but it took the seas to long to calm down and we didn't have time to make that run.

To make a long story short, The winds are still blowing, the seas are still rough, the water is dirty, and the bite is tough.

I know I have contradicted some other reports from the weekend, but, in the ocean up here at Southport, it was rough and the winds were howling!!!

As you know if you know me, I report it the way it is and....

IT WILL BE THE TRUTH..."IT IS WHAT IT IS"

Good news is, it will get better!!

Winds are predicted to start settling some this week and right now the weekend is looking good.

Fish On and God Bless!!!!!

Well we finally got it done!!! Now, let me explain....

Mike Rowe from Churchland,NC and Larry Swicegood from Tyro,NC finally got a day we could go fishing.

Being from the same area, I know these guys and I know that a rolling swell would not even start to phase the fellows, so we went fishing!!

Normally I wouldn't call 6 foot seas a good day to go fishing but they were in a swell 15 seconds apart and the winds and seas were to relax as the day progressed.

A 6 foot swell is nothing bad like a 6 foot wind wave, so don't get the two mixed up and head out in a 6 foot wave.

But these guys had booked me every month last year and were blown out every time.

Todays trip was booked for last week and was blown out but today was a go and it turned out nearly perfect.

Lets see, Mike's trip today was anchored by his first ever grouper, a nice Cobia, king Mackeral, and helped Larry place many Big Black Bass, Silver Snappers, Grey Snappers, grouper, triggerfish, Huge Vermillion Snappers, Jolt Heads, and of course, they both caught plenty of sharks.

Mike also caught a Coronet Fish today. This is only the second one of these I have ever seen in my entire life.

According to the biography of these "Coronet" fish they are only active at night in the carribbean.

Boy, someone made a wrong turn somewhere and in the middle of the day at that!!!

That's part of fishing offshore, you never know what you are going to catch.

Just ask mike about the Toad Fish and Eel's that are out there as well!!

Mike and Larry both hooked several sharks they could not stop or turn. Larry came out victorious when he finally managed a 100+ pound Bull Shark to the top.

Yeah, another Bull Shark, notice where his picture was taken, this one was left out of the boat!!!

Check out the dentures on this animal, and just last week I found my left hand hanging out of one of these things mouth when it jumped about 4 feet high in the boat just to get my hand when it moved.

The Bull Shark is noted to be the meanest shark that swims and can manuver and see very well out of the water.

And I know "First Hand", no pun intended, that is true!!!

Be careful, these sharks are especially dangerous and aggressive!!!

Both guys also hooked into I believe some big grouper that were too fast back into the rocks for them to get them up. You grouper guys know what I mean about that one!!!

But we all had a great time and it was just nice to spend the day on the water with some home town guys I haven't seen in a while.

You might want to buy some stock in the "BEN GAY" Company, their stock may go up after Mike and Larry get back from the store.

Till next time, Fish On and God Bless You All!!

All trips lately been cancelled due to winds and rough seas.

Mid week looks like we may get back out and bring you some more fishing reports.

Check back often... as soon as seas settle we'll have more reports.

Offshore should still be doing good, Inshore I don't know, lots of wind lately to have the water churned up and dirty and this will have a negative impact on the bite.

Good news though, when the winds and seas calm the water will clean up real fast and inshore bite should then resume and be good again.

We''ll let you know what's happening for real right here.

No sales gimmics, no hype, fishing is what it is and that's the way we report it.

Sometimes it's not what you want to hear and it's not what I want to report, but that's the way it is...

We surely hope you can appreciate the truth!!!  Fish On and God Bless!!!

Went in search for Spanish Mackeral this morning with Rob and Charley Phelps from Winston Salem,NC.

And that's just what we did. Search for them!!

I felt that the clearer water would be on the East side after this weeks SSW blow and I was right.

The water temp was 70 to 71 degrees, and up towards Carolina Beach inlet was quite a lot of bait with the terns working it....

But if the Spanish Mackeral are/were there then possibly all the passing fronts have them shut down.

We started at Sheepshead Rock and worked our way all the way to Masonboro Inlet and never got a bite!!!

Only heard of one "radio Spanish" coming from Sheepshead Rock but everyone else was having the same results with no fish.

Our inshore bite has been difficult the last couple of years. I don't know the reason, I have my opinion, but so does everyone else.

But the offshore bite is still in full swing!!! There is always something somewhere offshore willing to bite.

The deeper water fish offshore don't seem to even know a front passes and are ready to attack your baits.

If you have been having undesirable luck with the inshore trips, try a full day offshore trip, it's an entirely different world out there. You will not believe the difference!!!!

Inshore fish are so unpredictable I can't guarantee fish, but offshore is a different story.

 How different? you ask;

Different enough that if you go with us and I can't get you some fish on a full day (10 hour) trip, the trip will be on me!!!

Now, with the cost of everything going up, how can you beat a deal like that?!!!

Yeah, it looks like I am going to be forced to increase my rates a little to be able to stay in business.

It's not just fuel, everything I buy for the fishing trips has gotten so high I am afraid to sit down and figure how much I am actually spending to keep the boat stocked with fishing items.

Ice, bait, drinks, snacks, etc; have gone from $40.00 to $50.00 every morning to around $70.00 to $90.00. And that's before I even get to the Marina.

Not to even mention 16 ounce weights that last year were around 10 cents an ounce are now nearly 40 cents an ounce or $6.00 each and on some trips we lose 100 weights or more.

But I said I was not increasing my rates until gas hit $1.00 more than last year.  last year when I had to increase it went from $1.85 to $2.85. When it hits $3.85, I will have to increase again, and for that I apologise, but I have no choice.

If I stay at the rates I am I am out of business and most likely an increase will mean the same, but what else can I do.

This fuel ordeal to me is disgustingly sickening. Everytime crude goes up they have to go up, and what for, so they can make and bragg about even higher profits!!

  I'll stop there, sorry!!!

I will still stay as low as I can and as always, if you are booked at the old price, that will be the price I will honor. Once your booked, I don't increase you price!!

If it doesn't hit $3.85 I won't have a rate increase, but it hit $3.75 today and the manager where I buy my fuel said she was told that there was no stopping it in sight.

We all need to ban together and pick out one major oil company and everyone stay off their property. I think that would get someone's attention, but I don't know.

But I do know that doing something as a whole is better than what we are doing now, NOTHING!!!!

 Sorry, I got carried away!!

The offshore bite is still good, the inshore bite is terrible right now and will continue that way until the winds, fronts, storms, and water clears up!! Fish On and God Bless!!!

 Capt Butch

Todays winds were a bit much I thought for todays trip so I cancelled to be on the safe side.

Tomorrows trip has been cancelled as well, weather is looking real windy.

Thinking at this point Saturday may be "do-able", time will tell, but until then here's a summary of what's happening now..

The Spanish Mackeral are starting to show up on the beaches now. Your #1 and # 2 planers trolled around 6 to 7 knots with 00 Clark Spoons will catch the Spanish Mackeral. Also, a trolling weight with a Clark Spoon behind it will draw bites as well. Pull a "mackeral Tree" on a trolling weight and/or "Bird" and you may get multiple hook up's. Find a school feeding and break out the lite tackle and cast small lures to the Spanish like Got-Cha Plugs or the Yo-Zuri Crystal Minnows and you can have a great time catching some great fish dinners and have a blast doing it!!

The King Mackeral are making their first spring run feeding on the
heels of the Spanish. Live bait such as menhaden (pogys) will get the job done here. Slow troll live bait as slow as you can go. Around 1 knot or less is preferable. If conditions warrant, drifting can be better yet. If you can't find any live pogys, get in the "tide rip" at the mouth of the river and catch some Bluefish, a deadly bait for King Mackeral!!!! Anchoring and chumming while drifting baits on ballons works well. Another technique not used much in our area is kite fishing. This is a real effective way to fish and something different.

Whiting (Virginia Mullet) continue to bite in
the Cape Fear River and off the beach. Your double dropper bottom rigs baited up with the freshest shrimp you can find on some small hooks will catch these very tasty panfish.

Some speckled trout have showed up on the OCP using live shrimp. Also on OCP have been some blues, Spanish Mackeral, Whiting, and even a few Flounder!! The kings continue to bite on the Pier as well..

Bluefish have been working the "tide rip" at the mouth of the Cape Fear River. Watch for the terns diving on the baits the Blues run to the surface then try casting small spoons such as a Hopkins spoon on lite tackle. You will have a blast and maybe even pick up a few Spanish Mackeral that are in the mix as well. Be careful here, you can wind up "Grounded" if the tide is falling, pay attention to water depth and how fast you are being pulled out towards the Jay Bird Shoals!!

  Red  Drum, Speckled Trout, and
even a few flounder are biting in the creeks and ICW. Live bait such as mud minnows are great baits for the Drum and Flounder and live shrimp and live mud minnows are great baits for the Trout, and the Berkley Gulp Baits will catch them all!!

Offshore, the King Mackeral are biting in the Tower and Horse Shoe
areas. Frozen Cigar minnows as well as "jigged up minnows" with Sibiki Rigs are catching the Kings. Trolling 3 1/2 Drone Spoons on Planers is a deadly technique to quickly get your limit of King Mackeral as well!

Grouper and Bottom Fish are doing real good on the rocks and
ledges in 100+ feet of water.  Live baits such as cigar minnows and sardines as well as dead bait, cut baits, and squid are producing plenty of Grouper and bottom fish. Some of the Black Bass this year have been big ones. keep your eyes on the water around the boat while out in the grouper/bottomfish waters. There are some big Cobia out there checking you out right now. Last week we had 5 come up behind the boat but could not keep one hooked up!!!!

A great way to catch these big Cobia is with a "bucktail Jig rigged with a whole squid on it". Most of the time they can't resist this one!!

I have been seeing  a few of the "Flying Fish" in the areas around the Tower and Horse shoe lately. This can only mean that the Mahi-Mahi should be showing up soon
in the Tower and Horse Shoe areas. Mahi love to feed on the flying fish, it's one of their favorite if not their favorite foods so they will follow the flying fish where they go!!! The same baits for King Mackeral, cigar minnows will also get the Mahi-Mahi. I like to pull the dead cigar minnows on a lead head rig, it makes them look more natural. This week last year the Mahi- Mahi were at the Frying Pan Tower thick, they may be there again now!!!

Gulfstream action off Southport has been slower than normal this
year. The Wahoo and Mahi- Mahi are biting in the stream, (some have been pretty big) on trolled ballyhoo's with your favorite colored Blue and White "Blue Water Candy Lures" Skirt in front of the 'hoo's!! Wahoo's have also been hitting trolled lures.

Yellowfin Tuna have been slow showing up in the stream. I expect they may be
there now as you are reading this. The "Blue Water Candy lures" skirts, the one's you have confidence in, with the Ballyhoo will entice strikes from the Tuna.  I personally like the small ballyhoo for the Yellowfin Tuna. I feel I get more hook ups and strikes on the smaller hoo's. Only problem with the smaller baits though is that the smaller Mahi-Mahi will have a tendency to hit your baits more. Now that I think about it, I wouldn't exactly call that a problem!!!

Don't overlook the "Cedar Plug" lures, one of the "all-Time" best lures for the Gulfstream!!

 Good luck and God Bless!!!!

FISH ON!!

Rarely anymore does me, my wife, and my son Chris have the same day off at the same time. But today all the planets and stars lined up just right and it happened!!

So we loaded up the 16' deep v'ee and headed to one of our favorite fresh water lakes for some bream fishing.

This type fishing has always been one of Capt Chris's, his mom Barbara and my favorite types of fishing.

It is a casual, slower paced and more tranquil type fishing than offshore saltwater fishing and brings back memories of yesteryears.

We were hoping to get in on the spawning run of the big blue gills, but just like last year, the full moon in April, when the spawn occurs, I was out chasing Grouper and Snappers offshore.

So, we rigged up the ultra lite rods with our favorite colored "beetle spins" and started working the structure where we, as we say offshore, were "picking at 'em".

As we worked our baits I was watching Capt Chris and I let myself be taken back to the days when he and I started our journey through this life together side by side on our fishing and hunting adventures that would all to soon be pushed aside with lifes harsh realities!!

It was a day I won't soon forget, for once more I was on the lake with my most prized accomplishments, my wife and my son, both who I love very much and can't imagine what I would do without either one!!

I was swept back to the days at Fontana Lake where Capt Chris took his maiden voyage out in the boat fishing by himself.

He had learned very well!! When he came back to our houseboat, he had a fish box full of Walleyes, small mouth bass, and a IGFA World Record Rainbow Trout in which was verified by the IGFA as a world record!!

I thought about all the days we spent fishing and hunting with our trusty retriever Buddy "Bud" the Black lab. Our first Goose hunting trip Capt Chris and Bud both were so young, they both had to drag the geese, they were too heavy for them to pick up.

I remembered the first deer Capt Chris took one evening and how we were in the tree stand the next evening and all of a sudden Capt Chris started shaking real nervous like he did the day before when he saw his first deer, and I ask him, do you see a deer? His reply was no. Then I asked. Well then why are you shaking? He said, it's time for them to come!!

Oh my what a day it was for me, why do we have to "Grow up" and move on to what we think are better things.

I could go on and on but I won't. I just thank God for the times I had with Capt Chris.

Although he has moved on now to make his mark in this world I will continue on even though a big part of me is missing now.

I still have my memories of times past and this is what helps keep me going at times. Son it has been too long between fishing trips, lets try to do it more often in the future if we possibly can

I really do enjoy my moments now of  fishing with Capt Chris.

How could I have ever known that what I once took for granted, would turn out one day to be my little piece of "Heaven On Earth". I LOVE YOU CHRIS, Fish on and God Bless you always!!!! Dad.

Todays trip was with Ryan Hambleton, Eric Olsen, from Raleigh,NC David Saurler, Dale Baker, from Washington,DC, and Conrad Schatte, and Jay Nestlerode from Arlington,VA.

We started the morning off trying to convince a shark to bite. We had the baits deployed from top to bottom with a good chum line.

We got one good hit but had no solid hookups. It's tough when a shark won't bite.

Finally we decided to finish up the morning with trolling for some Spanish Mackeral. The terns were working some bait but it was being driven to the top by some bluefish, not Spanish.

In a last ditch effort I ran down the beach to the cleanest water I could find, still no Spanish Mackeral.

I did hear one boat captain say he had picked up two Spanish. So, some are here, it's just a little slow just yet.

The water is still dirty from all the winds lately. Just as soon as it clears up I expect the Spanish and King Mackeral bite on the beach to turn on!!!

The King Mackeral bite this time of year usually only last a few weeks as they move onto the beach to feed on the blues and Spanish, but it's a great time of year to catch yourself a real "smoker" as these early fish can be rather large.

Then later your more mixed sizes of  Kings will invade the near shore structures.

The bite on the King Mackeral offshore, (according to the radio talk), is still doing good starting about 20 miles out SE of the Cape Fear river. There have been some decent 20+ fish mixed in with these fish as well.

There are no bad fishing trips. We had a great trip and everyone got away from the real world for a little bit and had a relaxing few hours out on the water.

The catching or lack of, was the only "fly in the ointment" but sometimes there's a lot more to a fishing trip than how many fish you catch.

You may ask why I report a trip with so few fish, and if you do ask that question then you do not know us here at "YEAH RIGHT CHARTERS" and if that's so, then welcome to the source for fishing reports that tell it like it is. That's also known as the truth, something that's sometimes hard to find anymore!!!!

You will always get the truth, because whether I like it or not, it is what it is and and I hope I have earned your trust and respect by telling you the truth about fishing!!

We will be heading back offshore next week where the hungry fish live, weather permitting, so hope to have some better "catching" reports for you then.

Talked with James this morning on the boat "Final Approach" he went to the Gulfstream yesterday.

No Wahoo or Tuna, but some nice Mahi-Mahi. I would consider that a successful trip!! BTW if you want to get into offshore fishing, here's a great boat to do it with!!

Butch,
I wanted to let you know that I am selling my 3070 CC Pursuit. (Final Approach) It is priced right ! Please tell anyone interested.
If I were a little older, I would use it for chartering. It has allot of fishing space, good on fuel, good nav, and nothing broken. $95,000 or best offer.

James Demyan, 910-690-2128

Till next time Fish On and God Bless!!!

P.S. Just look at the pic, we didn't catch a lot of fish, but the smiles say it all about the trip.

Thanks guys, this is what it's all about!!!

Today we were offshore with Roy Cartrette, Dwayne Carter, Ronnie Tayloy, from Clinton,NC and Richard Reed from Whiteville,NC.

It was a little "bumpy" heading out so I switched directions and headed south instead of east so when everyone was give out from catching all the fish we would have a great ride in with a following sea, and it worked out as planned.

Or nearly everything worked out as planned. I'll explain in a moment!!!

But the ride back worked out perfect. I looked back at one time and everyone was taking a nap on the bean bag recliners I have on the boat for everyone to ride on.

If you haven't ever ridden in a boat on one of these things, you don't know what you are missing!!!

The bottomfish were biting good in the 300's and the King Mackeral bite was good in the area of the Horseshoe.

The Spanish Mackeral are biting some on the beaches around the inshore reefs and so are the bluefish.

The piers have reported King Mackeral being caught so the Kings are here now feeding on the Spanish and Blues.

Whiting (Virginia Mullet), are biting in the Cape Fear River near the mouth, and heading out yesterday morning and the terns were working the tide rip at the mouth of the Cape Fear. This is a good place to cast small spoons and catch Spanish Mackeral and Blue Fish.

I am starting to see more and more flying fish offshore, so look for the Mahi-Mahi to start showing up in the areas like the Tower and Horse Shoe before much longer.

With the winds blowing from one direction and the current in another, the "Power Buoy" earned its keep again today.

Simply dropping it off to the side of the fish for a reference point proved most helpful today allowing us to pin point our anchoring right on the fish.

If you do not have one of these markers and are trying to bottomfish, why are you making it harder than you have to?

You can get you own "Power Buoy" by calling Mike @ (843) 665-5613. Tell him I sent you and save $50.00.

Todays fishermen loaded up two 100+ quart coolers with some very large Black Bass, some of the biggest triggerfish I have seen in a while, good sized Vermillion Snapper (B-Liners), nice Silver Snappers (pinkies), Big ole' Grey Snappers, some large "Joltheads", decent Gag Grouper, a nice King Mackeral, and of course sharks.

Speaking of sharks, be careful with these predators as I found out today one stupid mistake or drop your guard for one second and these creatures can hurt you real bad.

Roy hooked and fought to boat side a big Bull Shark. Looking at him we were quite sure it was keeping size of 54 inches but not real sure.

So the plan was for everyone to get clear and we would bring it on board alive to measure to be sure it was legal so if it wasn't we could release it alive.

This will never happen again on my boat!!!! If I am not absoulutely sure it's a keeper I won't kill it, and it will only come into my boat again after it is subdued.

We got it into the boat and everyone was safely out of harms way, except for me where I thought I was in control of the situation.

Then all of a sudden, this animal turned and "jumped" just like a dog attacking and in a split second my left hand was half way down his throat and those razor sharp teeth had a death grip on my left hand.

God was with me though, for the creature laid still and didn't thrash around and didn't spin, had he done that, my hand would have been gone.

He laid still long enough for me to pry his mouth open and get my hand out, I was extrermely lucky coming out with only some major cuts, but it could have been much worse.

Yeah, I know bringing a shark like this into the boat alive was stupid, but out of respect for the resource, I didn't want to kill it if it wasn't legal.

My philosophy from this point on is that if I can't tell it's legal size so I can dispatch it before coming aboard then you will just have to be satisfied with "in water" pictures and Grouper/bottomfish to eat for dinner!!!

So, let this be a wake up call for you as it was for me, we tend to get 10 feet tall and bullet proof, or so we think, and drop your guard for one second, make a stupid mistake and things can get bad real fast!!

But we all still had a great trip, I didn't loose my hand plus I got to file away a little more education that will prevent major accidents and make our charter trips even safer in the future and these guys are in for several tasty fish dinners with a fish story to tell about how the hunter became the hunted!!! Till next time, Fish On and God Bless!!!

Talked to a man yesterday and he told me while I was offshore Saturday, they wore out the Spanish Mackeral on Yaupon reef.

Also, the whiting are still biting in the river. The best baits for the whiting are the freshest shrimp you can find, and if you catch a spot, use cut bait from that.

Sometimes the whiting will bite fresh spot better than shrimp.

Spanish Mackeral can be caught by trolling your #1 and #2 planers with 00 Clark spoons. Be sure to run plenty of leader 30, 40, even 50 feet is not too much. I use 17 to 20 pound Berkley Vanish Flourocarbon line for a leader.

Spanish Mackeral are very terminal tackle shy so tie the spoon directly to the leader. Do not use any swivels at the spoon!!

To avoid line twist of the leader, what we do is hook several, 3 to 5 quality ball bearing swivels together then hook to the planer then tie the leader to the swivels.

This will prevent your leader from twisting up as the Clark spoon spins in the water. When you get a Spanish Mackeral on and wind the planer to the rod tip, hand line the leader to the boat but be sure to let the leader stay in the water.

This will prevent tangles in the leader as it does when you allow it to stay in the boat. With the Spanish Mackeral at boat side, make one smoothe lift or swing, placing the Spanish Mackeral in the boat, that way you will loose far fewer fish than by trying to quickly jerk them in.

With the leader in the water now, just unhook your fish, be careful of those razor sharp teeth, and toss the lure back in the water. Reset the planer, do a count of about 5 and you are back to fishing.

I like to count one planer down at a count of 5 and the other at a count of 8, this puts your planers at different depths covering more water.

Plus, it helps keep the lures from tangling when you make a turn. Also, you can run another spoon down the middle on a trolling sinker and I like to run a "Mackeral Tree" behind a "Bird" rig on top water from a rod in the hard top rod holders.

You can get the Bird rigs and Mackeral Tree rigs at Dutchman's Creek Bait and Tackle, beside the airport, or at Oak Island Sporting Goods on Oak Island.

Another note on leaving the leader in the water when hand lineing the fish in.......

When the bite gets hot and heavy and you are letting the leader fall in the boat, eventually you will hastily go to throw the lure back in and you will be standing on the leader.

When that happens this will drive the hook home into your hand or finger, this I know from experience.

But if this does happen, just place your hand or finger on something solid, press down hard on the spoon and you can push the hook right out. It really does work, it hurts a little, but works!!

Troll around 6 to 7 knots and if the bite is slow, I will make slow "S" curves and note which side the boat the bites are coming from. If more bites are on the inside of the turn, then that dictates to slow the troll speed down, ditto for the outside faster.

Even though Spanish Mackeral are not the sportiest fish on trolling gear, they make up for that on the table.

But, find a school and break out the lite spinning tackle and cast  some small lures like a Yo-Zuri Crystal Minnow or a Got-Cha plug, etc; and immediately they bring on a whole new meaning of "lite tackle sportfishing".

You have been working hard, it's time to reward yourself with a little rest and fun, no better way to do that than go catch a mess of Spanish Mackeral.

They are here, go have some fun and God Bless!!!

                                                               FISH ON!!!

Sorry for the late reports, seems like there isn't enough time to get it all done anymore. May be the fact that the older I get, the slower I get but I try to stay consistent!!

The weather and winds have given us a few days of calmer seas and we took advantage of it and went fishing. And the catching wasn't bad either.

The Gulfstream trips were traded off for bottom trips, and it was a good trade as the fish were co-operating pretty good.

Yesterday's trip was a great time. The pictures are posted of the fish, the fisherpeople asked to remain anonymous and their wishes have been granted.

Today's trip was with Mike Neighbors and his future son in law  Denver Compton. Both are from Goode, VA.

We had a very eventful trip today. These guys caught a little of everything. They had Black Bass, Grey Snappers, Triggerfish, Grouper, Vermillion Snapper, Sharks, Silver Snapper, King Mackeral, and Flounder.

Looks like the next few days are going to be blown out. I have already cancelled tomorrow's trip and most likely will have to call off Tuesdays as well.

Oh yeah, they are still catching King Mackeral off the piers and I got a report of a Spanish mackeral caught off the pier two days ago.

Also, the Blues are biting. Talked to some guys at the boat ramp this evening and they had caught some big whiting in the river today using shrimp for bait.

It is fishing/catching time in Southport, NC.

Hope I see you on the water, till next time, Fish On and God Bless!!!!

Today's trip was scheduled to be a Gulfstream trip but was changed this morning to a bottom trip because that's what they decided they wanted to catch.

I was fishing today with local Doctor James R. Forstner and his son's "Jim" and Phil. Also with them was Dr. Mark Kaley, Mark Oglesby, and Matt McGiven.

We had to work hard today to get the fish, the bite was slower than usual, but we kept moving and hitting the little overlooked spots that nobody fishes and in the end it paid off.

Other captains on other charter boats were reporting a slow grouper bite today, but If you attend my seminars on grouper fishing then you know what I was looking for and what and how I was fishing them.

That technique paid off very well, we had ten keeper grouper today to go along with several limits of reef complex species that included Grey Snapper, Joltheads, Trigger Fish, Almaco Jacks, with them were some Big Black Bass, Silver Snappers,Triple Tails, and Vermillion Snappers. There were plenty of sharks today as well, but we released all those.

Dr. James Forstner is pictured with his Big and very colorful Queen Trigger Fish, Mark Ogelsby was tagged the "Trigger Man" today as he caught most all the rest of the Trigger Fish. Phil Forstner landed the Almaco Jack after a long hard battle and all had a time today cranking in fish till their arms were sore.

I tried to go fishing with these guys last year but the weather would never let us go, but today was just as nice as it was rough last year!!!

The King Mackeral bite is here and there. Sounded on the radio this evening that there was a evening bite happening in the area of the Tower.

Hope you can get down to enjoy one of God's great gifts he has made available to us all. For Jesus said, Come and I will make you fishers of men.... Till next time Fish On and God Bless!!

Just got a call that the King Mackeral are being caught from the pier.

Looks like the winds are going to start calming down by the last of this week.

This is the time of year when it all starts coming together and the calmer winds with the warm temps should cause great fishing!!

Look for the fishing to shift into high gear any time now. With the temps getting into the 80's  towards the end of the week, I look for it to break loose this weekend.

It's the last of April, It is Time to go fishin' and do some catching!!!!

Got gulfstream trips and bottom trips this weekend, I predict some good reports coming, I can just feel it !!! FISH ON and God Bless!!! Capt Butch

Today we were on a Bottomfishing trip. We were fishing with Otho C. Lyon,Sr, Otho C. Lyon,Jr, Eddie Johnson, from Butner,NC, David Riley, Efren Daniel, from Creedmore,NC and Willie Hodges from Raliegh,NC.

The conditions and winds were a little more than were predicted so we worked our way from the Tower area around to the east side to take advantage of the "trough ride" returning to the dock.

These guys caught a pile of fish but several hundred did not meet the legal size restrictions that are required to be legal. But a lot of them did!!

We had Big Black Bass, Huge Grey Snappers, Big Ole' Red Grouper, Strawberry Grouper, Large Bluefish, Big Vermillion Snappers, Great tasting Joltheads, Nice Silver Snappers, and of course, all the Sharks you could want and then some!!!

With the windy and full moon conditions we were blessed well for our efforts today and this fishing trip  with these guys would have been considered a success if not a fish was caught!!!

Till next time FISH ON and GOD BLESS!!! Capt Butch & "Admiral Bodie" the fish dog says, I am semi retired now, But I'm still thinking about those fish scales and slime everyday, I sure do miss it...

Sorry this report is a little late. Had some equipment repairs I had to get done today so I would be ready for tomorrows trip.

We left South Harbour Marina yesterday morning with Ricky Jones and his son Joey, Michael Pruitt (aka "fuzzball") Ray Wallen and Adam Wallen. All are from Asheville,NC, but Adam now lives on Oak Island.

We went towards the 100/400 but later decided to go to the Black Jack instead. The first Line in was rigged with a Blue/White Blue Water Mini Jag over a ballyhoo. I ran the bait back around 100 feet and I had just set the rod in the holder when the clicker on the Penn International 50TW "lit up"!!! FISH ON!!!!!!

It was a nice Skipjack Tuna about 15 lbs. I figured it was show time finally in the stream at last, but we trolled on until around noon before the next reel went off with another Skipjack Tuna.

The "hot bite" today was at the 100/400, just where I was planning to go first but we changed and went to the Blachjack. What's that commercial that used to be on about "Almond joy Candy Bars", Sometimes you feel like a nut, sometimes you don't. Hey, that's part of the mystery of fishing!!!

I don't care who you are, you can't be a "Hero" all the time!!!

Around 1PM  everyone at the Blackjack was reporting a very slow bite. Never heard any reports from the 100/400 until after we got back to the dock!! Guess everyone was to busy catching fish.

One boat at the Blackjack said he had two small Blackfins and another said he had not gotten a bite and another reported a couple of "knockdowns" but no hook up's.

We felt pretty lucky with the reports from the other boats so we made the call to go bottom fishing.

With not having much time left to bottomfish, I pulled out my log book and punched in some of the numbers I found many years ago on the edge of the break.

I was confident with these for I have not fished these rocks in years. and not fishing them for a long time paid off.

These guys put some pretty fish in the boat. Big grey snappers, Silver Snapper, Large Vermillion Snappers,(b-liners), Big ole' Triggerfish, Knot Head Black Bass, A Pile of Grouper's,and Joey showed his dad how to land a Big Shark, which there was no shortage of!!!

If you didn't make it out yesterday to fish, I am sorry you couldn't make it. The day was beautiful and I was able to spend it on one of God's Beautiful Creations with some Great Guys!!!! Till next time, FISH ON and God Bless!!! Capt Butch.

I'll make this one short and to the point. It's late and I am going to try to get to the stream tomorrow.

Fish today with Darryl Bell, James Hunter,Sam Cole, Sam Stewart Reuben McNair, and Clifford Stone from Washington,DC.

We were fishing the areas around the Tower for bottom fish and despite the rough conditions we did fairly well!!

The word from the other boats that were King Mackeral fishing was not very promising. In fact reports were from a couple dozen fish to as few as just one.

But as usual, the bottom fish are willing to bite if you find and set up on the right spots. Until next time, FISH ON and GOD BLESS!!!! Capt Butch.

Let's try this again!!! I typed it in once today and just as I went to publish it to the website the internet lost connection and I lost it all, so here we go again!!!

Yes, believe it or not the winds did let up enough to get offshore today although I was a bit paranoid to the point where we cancelled first thing but an hour later the seas were getting better so we gave it a shot.

As the day progressed we were rewarded with a beautiful day offshore with hungry fish and great fellowship from Jeff Russell, Tom Gardner,Charles Matthews, Melvin Wilcox, Mark Bishop, and Kris Churchill from Oxford,NC.

Once we made it to our first stop we got the "Yeah Right" in position on the structure and the "games began".

The bottom bite was hot with Black bass, Grey Snapper, Silver Snapper, Vermillion Snapper, Triggerfish, and sharks.

There were some big fish hooked up today, the first big shark was hooked up by Mark Bishop and for a while there we all thought that the shark was going to win this fight, but Mark finally landed the knock out punch and was rewarded with a nice Black Tip for a photo shoot!!

Everyone got their limit of one Atlantic Sharpnose Shark for the grill and all the rest (that we got in the boat) were photographed and then released alive to fight again another day!!!

Tom Gardner had something happen to him twice today that hardly ever happens, especially twice in the same day.

He hooked up on two big fish and both times the hook broke. Usually it's the line that breaks or the fish justs gets off, not the hook breaks!!

The king mackeral bite that had been happening in the Tower area must have slacked off. We never trolled for any Kings but the lite line never produced a king all day.

But what it did produce was sharks!!! I don't ever recall seeing as many atlantic sharpnose sharks, Blacktips, and Bull sharks as we had around the boat all day. It reminded me of the way the Spiney dogfish sharks are in the early spring.

I mean it was nothing to have a whole heard circling the boat, 50, 60, possibly 100+ sharks in a school, it was awesome.

Had a big schol of AJ's to come under the boat as well, but none were interested in eating our baits, and that's sorta unusual, but that's fishing!!

But nothing seemed to bother the bottom fish though!! I bet I know a few guys that hit the "Ben Gay" hard last night!!!

It was great to fish with these guys, and it was great to finally get some calmer winds so we could go fishing!!

Sometimes I ask myself why I do what I do, and today I was reminded why I do it. As I have said before, Fisherpeople are the greatest people in the world, and spending a day fishing with people like these guys is surely my "Heaven on earth"!!! Till next time, FISH ON and GOD BLESS!!!!

I hope someone will email or post a fishing report for today in the "Forum" .

I also hope this is the last time I do this this year!!

Todays charter wanted to go offshore but didn't want to drive down from Charlotte/Monroe area if it was going to be rough. And I can understand this especially with the fuel prices the way they are!!

I was told it was supposed to be a good day, but all I had to go on was the weather report that was up yesterday for today and it was "15 to 20 knot winds seas 5 to 7 feet", so for safetys sake and the fact that 5 to 7 foot seas are miserable, it was decided not to take the chance!!

Well, I probably just sat on the hill today and watched the ocean be as calm as it will ever be again for the rest of my life, or even maybe till the end of time, but I had to make the call on the information that I had to work with.

I could and really want to make some comments about the weather forecasting we have in this area, this is not the first time this has happened and I am sure it won't be the last!!! But I will just keep what I think to myself...

But to clearify to some of my charters why this happens sometimes, well here is a sample of what we Captains here in Southport see at times for a forecast or something similar (Winds SW 5 to 25 knots and variable, seas 2 to 11 feet), now I ask you, what would you say the seas would be like for the day?

I hope I have the "Bad Calls" out of the way now for a while and after this front gets out of here in the next few days we can get down to some serious fishing!!!

I know the fish had to bite today, so go ahead and add insult to injury and let us know what we missed besides a flat calm day on the water!! Till next time, FISH ON and GOD BLESS!! Capt Butch

This is one of those "It is what it is" fishing reports.

Fished on the beach out to Lighthouse Rocks and a mile or two beyond and the fishing was TOUGH!!!!!!!!!!!!

With me was James Braswell, Phillip Turner, and Thomas Cutler, Yeah Right's new 1st mate this year.

We marked plenty of fish but they just were not wanting to bite today.

Talked to Scott Blevins, he is a very good fisherman, one I believe is as good as there is in Southport, and he was having the same bad luck as we were.

He fished for the Atlantic Bonito's and never got a bite so I didn't even bother to try for them. Didn't see any telltale sign that some were around anyway.

Scott and we both jigged up a few fish mostly Grey Trout, Blues, and Black Bass. We caught a lot of Black Bass but the biggest of the bunch was just over 11 inches, short of the 12 inch size limit.

Want to get an idea just how tough the inshore fishing was yesterday, think about this, we never caught the first shark, can you believe that!!!!!????

Offshore is a different scenerio though. The King Mackeral continue to bite in the Tower area and so does the bottom fish.

So your best bet now is offshore at least until the inshore waters clear back up. They are pretty "sandy" due to all the winds we have had lately and the sand mixed in with the water works on the fishes breathing mechinisims in their gills and causes them to become lethargic, therefore are reluctant to feed.

Weather that is actually true or not is negotiable, but it sounds good and is the best educated guess I can come up with at this time as to why I am having to post a report that the fish didn't bite.

I am sure somebody slammed them somewhere inshore, but we didn't and I'm not going to say we did.

In fishing "it is what it is" and reporting anything else would just be a lie, and lie's are not what you come to my fishing report site to read.

i was going offshore today, but I listened to the weather man again today and so far it looks like I made a wrong call today.

It is tough trying to make the right calls with the kind of weather reports we get down here. It's not as critical if you are going out to commercial fish, we are used to and expect rough seas!!

But it is a different when you are taking people out on charters that are not used to doing this all the time and so you don't want to take any chances with them and you want them to have an enjoyable trip in calm seas so sometimes when I am not sure I won't take the chance and I miss call the weather.

But at least this way, you can be assured that if you live, there will be another day to go fishing!!!!

Thanks everyone for your continued support, Thank you for visiting "our" website. Thanks to everyone that attended our seminars and the humbling and very kind comments you wrote to me about them, all you guys and gals are the BEST!!!!!

Looks like we have another weather pattern coming through the next few days, in fact it's going to drop into the low 30's, "ouch".

Hopefully this will be winters last charge to stick around and spring will finally take over.

Surely the next fishing report I have here will be an improvement over this one, but if not, just remember, "IT IS WHAT IT IS" and that's what you will always see here and you can believe that!!!

Till next time, FISH ON and God Bless!!! Capt Butch, 1st mate Thomas, and "Admiral Bodie" the fish dog says, I knew the fish wern't going to bite, that's why I stayed in bed, and we are known as "dumb dogs" YEAH RIGHT!!!!

4-7-08

Keep your fingers crossed, it looks like at this time just maybe the winds are going to start letting up some and we just might be able to go fishing offshore towards the end of the week!!!

Got a report this morning of some American Bonito's being caught, I won't tell where due to "Professional courtesy" but they should be here off Southport,NC real soon. Possibly out there now!!!!

If you have the chance and time you need to fish the MAD (Military Apprecition Day) tournament. This is for a great cause, for if not for the men and women of our Military, you or I would not be going fishing, Period!!

Midnight Wind will most likely send me some info. on the Tournament and as soon as I get it I will post it up here!!

The Red fish, Speckled Trout, Black Drum, and even a few small Flounder (on the dark mud areas)continue to bite on the inside.

On the beach the Blues are here and some whiting are being caught.

When the winds lay down, King Mackeral, Bottomfish and Gulfstream action should be waiting for you offshore!!! Till next time, FISH ON and GOD BLESS!!! Capt Butch.

4-6-08
  Don't forget, if you can make it Tuesday around 7PM to the Hanes Mall Golden Corral I will be doing a seminar on Grouper/Bottomfishing/anchoring/chart reading/etc;

If you would like to have a meal first come out around 6PM.

Hope you can make it!!!! We will have free samples from some of my sponsors(until we run out) but I have a bunch.

Come on out and join the fun and bring your questions.

 Is it possible????

Am I reading the forecast right???

Do you think that the winds just might be going to ease up a little???????

I sure hope what I am reading on the weather forecast is true!!!!

I just returned from a very enjoyable evening at the "MEMBERS CLUB" in St. James.

I and my wife were hosted for dinner by John and Bill of the "ST. James Fishing Club" at the Members Club restaurant. Thanks guys, it was an honor and we both Thank You very much!!!

From there we went to the meeting room and we talked about various types of fishing from flounder to grouper.

We covered chart reading, what types of structure to look for for grouper and where and how to target flounder in our area.

We also discussed various rigs and tackle to use for both flounder, grouper, and bottom fishing in general.

Areas to locate grouper and flounder were also discussed.

Different baits were discussed for flounder and grouper and the advantages and disadvantages of braid vs mono.

A demonstration on how to tie grouper/bottom fishing rigs and the benefits and various ways to keep them out of the rocks and an effective way to get a grouper out of the rocks (most of the time)when he gets back in them was presented.

The benefits of the "Pabco Power Buoy" and a demonstration of the power this unit has was covered as well and everyone got a free "SWIV-L-STOP" from Pabco just for being there.

The benefits of using electric reels was covered and a demonstration of the kind of power the "PRECISION REELS" we use on the "Yeah Right"  was shown.

Other sponsor door prizes consisted of hats from "Precision Reels", "Big Bone Grubs" from Boneyard Baits, various lures, skirts, and rigs from Blue Water Candy Lures,  CW Crab lures from Chuck at CW Crab lures, and some King Mackeral live bait rigs tied up by yours truly from"Yeah Right Tackle Supply."

I hope everyone had as good a time as I did. My wife and I were treated extremely nice and everyone there was first class and made us feel very welcomed.

What can I say but again Thank You for inviting us and hopefully you liked the seminar good enough that we can do it again sometime!!

If any of you guys have any more questions just give me call or email and I'll do my best to help you out.

The offshore fishing lately has been put on hold because of the winds. My charter calender has so many X's on it from cancellations, it looks like I am counting the days off for something.

Actually, I am, I am counting them off for the winds to settle down some. I thought last year was bad, but according to the "Archives" from last year this time we were fishing fairly regular with several Gulfstream trips already made.

This year so far, we can't even get out on the beach its been so rough and the weekend doesn't look any better with predicted strong thunder storms and 20+ MPH winds in the forecast.

I know, I hate to sound so negative, and I would love to tell you what you want to hear, but it is what it is, and if I told you different, I would be lying to you. And I have always tried to be "straight up" with you!!!

But it is April, and the windy weather will be calming soon as the "transition period" gets completed and then we will all forget about this bad weather. look at the good side of this though, at least we are getting rain this year.

I guess if we have to have winds to get the rains then it's OK, for we need the rain some kind of bad!!!

Someone said the weather was looking good for Saturday, I wonder where they were talking about? Surely it was not the South Facing beaches of Brunswick County, doesn't look good to me, but hey, what do I know, I have only been doing this for nearly 50 years now!! Till next time, FISH ON!!  The winds will soon let up so hang in there!!! If they do in the next week or so I would expect some Atlantic Bonito to be in the area off the beaches.

Here is an article I wrote for a couple of magazines on some tips to help you catch some. In case you don't see it or it doesn't get published (sometimes they don't), here it is for you on this website.

          SPRINGTIME ATLANTIC BONITO FISHING

It is getting time for the Atlanic Bonito (Sarda Sarda) to appear, and someone may have already seen or caught some. But, usually sometime in April is when they show up off the Southport beaches and are then usually gone on to where ever they go in a few weeks!!! These are not to be confused with the Tuna that is known as a “False Albacore”. The Atlantic Bonito is much more desirable for Sushi and the grill.

The most distinguishing marks that separate it from the “False Albacore” are the straight black lines that run from head to tail on the upper back. The “False Albacore” have “squiggly“, worm type marking on its back.

Here are some tips and techniques we have found that help put more fish in the boat here at Yeah Right Charters in Southport,NC. For more fishing information go to www.yeahrightcharters.com

I like to look for Atlantic Bonito chasing bait from the water around the inshore reefs like Yaupon and McGlammery in the early morning ( up to around 8AM). I have found that they prefer the "low light" times of day, but, this is not written in stone, as with all fishing!!

A good way to catch Atlantic Bonito is to circle the school, which can sometimes be rather large, use your regular #1 or #2 planers and Clark spoons as you are Spanish Mackeral fishing. I like to troll around 6 to 7 knots and I will often use a larger Clark spoon such as a #1 while trolling.

Also, I will start with golds and silvers and see if the Bonito's are having a preferance for a color at that time. Another good trick is to troll in "S" curves and take note. If the fish are mostly hitting on the outside of the "S" curve then I would troll in a straight pattern a little faster, hitting on the inside, troll straight pattern a little slower, EXPERIMENT!!!!

Try to stay out of the school, this tends to spook the fish!! Another way is to troll past them on the outside of the school and then turn around and troll past them on the other side. I have found that if you do not time it right and try to troll in front of the school the way they are traveling, you will wind up right in the middle of the school of Bonito then it's "game over" for those fish!!!

Main thing is to not allow your boat to get into the school, doing so will most of the times shut them off and drive them away. Now, once you locate a school you may want to hit them with a casting technique.

For this I like a 6 to 7 foot Light Action spinning rod equipped with a quality reel with a good, smooth drag system. The reel needs to be able to hold at least 200 yards of 8 to 10 pound line. You need a lot of line capacity in case you hook up with a big Bonito.

For casting to the school you can use just about anything you have confidence in as long as it is not real big. Some good lures to use would be a 1 ounce Sting Silver Spoon, a Mirro-Lure Top Dawg, and a Yo Zuri Crystal Minnow are good choices in your favorite color.

For casting, stay up current of the school and use the oceans current to keep you moving with the school of fish. This way, you can keep everything quite and not spook the fish as much!!

Another fun way to catch the Atlantic Bonito is on a Fly Rod. I carry a 14 weight on my boat for the bigger fish, but for these smaller Tuna's I would opt for a 8 weight rod.

A good quality reel here is important. One that can carry 200 yards of backing and a sinking fly line. A good drag here is important here as well. The sinking line will allow you to cast farther to reach the school without having to get on top of them plus it will usually catch the bigger fish that tend to lurk below the frantic surface feeding fish!!

The fly of your choice and color will most likely work fine. These fish when feeding will attack most anything!!! Also, an 8 foot leader with a 10 pound tippet works great.

Also, be sure to read up on your IGFA rules if you are going to use a fly rod outfit, you just might find yourself in the record books!!!
FISH ON!!!

Had to cancel today's offshore trip again today. I just checked the Tower buoy and it was 8.9 feet every 7.3 seconds, no thanks I'll stay on land!!!

And that's just what we did. My new 1st Mate this year, Thomas and I along with my wife Barbara and of course "Admiral Bodie" the fish dog went to a creek this evening where the Black Drum had been biting real good.

But, with the changing weather and the falling tide a couple hours fishing only would produce a few fish. And I mean few!! Let's see, I caught two small Black Drum, one spot and one crab. Thomas missed three or four and managed one small Black Drum and as for Barbara, well she struck out.

The fishing was slow today, but truthfully with the cold front and howling winds we did better than I figured we would.

Getting back to where I was going, "Admiral Bodie" had a "ball" today, it doesn't take much to please him and family and good friends just enjoying the evening together is a formula for a successful trip, it was nice!!

It's been a while since he had slime in his hair and scales on his teeth and he loved every minute of it.

It is amazing how animals know instinctively what will hurt them and what won't. Today was "Admiral Bodie's" first encounter with a crab and he knew to stay clear of those pinchers.

As usual, Bodie provided everyone with plenty of entertainment as he let the fish and crab know who was boss!!

Guys, I hate to keep canceling your fishing trips, but believe me you will like me and offshore fishing much better for it!! The seas lately have been just too rough to go fishing!!!

This transition period of the year is fast coming to an end and soon the winds and seas will settle and we will be back offshore doing what we all love to do.

But until then, grab a fishing rod, some fresh shrimp, a few friends and head to Ocean Crest Pier or a canal bank and just wet a hook and talk and laugh about the past and present and let the future take care of its self for a day!!! Till next time, FISH ON!!! Capt Butch, Thomas, Barbara, & "Admiral Bodie" the fish dog says, those spots are more my size and those little crabs can hurt you bad!!!

I had hope earlier in the week for the weekend but now those hopes have been dashed as this front passes tonight and the winds shift from SW to NNE and increase.

It is that time of year, a transition period where the weather and winds battle it out till one finally dominates.

I have had several charters this week and this weekend but I don't have any offshore fishing reports because I decided not to run the trips due to the rough conditions offshore. Yeah, we could have gone, but it wouldn't have been any fun!!

Every trip I had was for offshore and fuel is just too expensive now to have you drive down here knowing that we can't get offshore far enough with the winds we are having to get to the good fish.

I just can't charge you to go out a few miles and catch a few Black Bass that most likely won't meet the new 12 inch size limit anyway, unless that's what you want to do!!!

Every one has rebooked for June and July, some of our best months for more stable weather and we will have some good reports to post when we do run the trips.

The Black Bass are  biting and you can catch some starting about 10 miles out. You might pick up a few keepers, but most will be too small.

There are some small blue fish around and the Black Drum were biting on the inshore reefs.

Whiting are biting pretty good on Ocean Crest Pier.

Inside, the Red Drum and some Speckled Trout are being caught.

I will have an offshore report here soon, I hope!!

If the winds don't soon lay out, ya'll can come see me, I will be the new "People Greeter" at Wal-Mart!! Till next time, FISH ON!!! Capt. Butch

3-22-08

Oh well, I had hoped to have you a couple of offshore reports for this weekend.

But mother nature and her winds in March have once again proven she is the boss!!

I will not take you out on a boat ride and just take your money. If it's too rough to go and have some fun and catch fish, then why go? There will be better days to go.

I want you to have good memories of your trip and me and "Yeah Right charters"!!!

The Red Drum are biting as are the Black Drum. The Reds are biting good on mud minnows and the Black Drum are biting on the near shore reefs and creeks. Try some "one arm bandits" for the Blacks.

Have not heard of any Speckled Trout caught, but I bet someone out there is catching a few. Maybe they will be kind enough to let us know if they are biting some by putting it in the "Forum"!

Hang in there, the winds will settle as it does every year and soon the windy days will be forgotten and the sound we will soon hear over the humming of the four stroke Hondas will be..... FISH ON!!! Capt Butch.......... to be continued.............

Today I was fishing with Jason Crane from Baltimore,MD and Steven Choi from Owings Mills, MD.

We had thought about the Gulfstream but with the predicted blow coming later today we decided to stay a little closer to shore just to be on the safe side.

The current offshore was as bad as I have seen it in a while. The regular armada of commercial fishermen that spend weeks at a time out fishing were all reporting the terrible conditions and non-existant bite due to the current.

Not willing to let it get the best of us, I made some adjustments to the conditions and we hit "paydirt" on the ocean bottom.

We fished with BERKLEY GULP some and again, it caught fish. This is a great bait for offshore bottom fishing. I really like the squid and the shrimp!!

We caught some of the biggest Black Bass I have seen in a while. Along with those we had a nice 19" Flounder, several Sharks, Big Grey Snappers, nice sized Triggerfish, and even some Silver Snappers.

The current was so strong and the winds were blowing hard enough that anchoring was tough, or nearly impossible. So, I dropped the "Power Bouy"  off to the side down current of the fish and structure and backed the boat up to the area.

With both engines running at 1500 RPM's it would hold us still and we could hit the fish a few minutes before the winds would blow us off of them.

This was the first time I had ever tried the "Power Buoy" in a current this strong. I had my doubts. I was amazed, the weight hit the bottom and the "Power Buoy" held like a champ.

The more I use it the more I realize this is a great bottom fishing tool that works great!!! Today's trip would have probably been a "bust" without it!!

The fishing conditions were tough but an adaption to the situation turned the day into a success.

A lot more work to get on the fish and stay on the fish than normal, but the end results were much more satisfying than a bunch of excuses that the fish aren't biting!! Till next time, FISH ON!!! Capt Butch & "Admiral Bodie" the fish dog says HI!!.

Weekend weather looks to be getting worse!!

Get your spring cleaning done now while the winds are blowing so that when it calms down you will be ready to go!!

The fuel has gotten to expensive to drive all the way down here with Gail Force Winds Predicted for this weekend!!

The recent rains still have our inside waters pretty dirty and the Trout and Drum bite is still slow.

There are "pockets" here and there that the water has cleared up and the bite is much better there. But for the most part it is slow!!

Talked to Thomas Cutler today, (who is going to be our mate this year) told me he fished in the upper end of a canal this evening and did real well on the Black Drum.

Find the right spot and you can catch some fish!!

Sounds like the shark bite may be easing up a little, I sure hope so!!!

Offshore fishing is always good here and the Gulfstream has started producing some Wahoo and Blackfin Tuna. Yellowfin Tuna should be here any time now and may already be here!!

Pick you days now to head offshore!!!

Just wanted to give you a "heads up" on the fishing and the weekend weather. I know it's not what you want to hear, but, it is what it is.

I try hard to help you with your fishing, I hope I am doing a good job for you!!  FISH ON!!! Capt Butch

I guess you could say it is official now. Last minute details have kept me off the water lately, but I had a friend in the Gulfstream today and Mike reported to me that the Wahoo and Blackfin Tuna are there.

But after a spring like last year, I believe the best news is that the weather patterns are more normal so far this year and we are starting to get some days we can get out to the stream.

If you remember last year, we all sat and watched 20+ MPH winds just about every day for nearly three months.

The weather report for offshore looks good through Thursday. The weekend looks rough at this time, but we all know how quick it can change down here, good and bad!!! Keep track of the weather report at the top of this report by clicking on the "offshore marine forecast".

So, my unofficial official prediction is that the Gulfstream season has started. Well, it's the 10th of March, it's time!!!!

If we didn't get to go last year due to the weather, hopefully it will be more cooperative this year. So let's go catch a Tuna or Wahoo or Mahi or even maybe a Blue Marlin or Sailfish, April is the prime month!!!!Till next time, FISH ON!!! Capt Butch & "Admiral Bodie" the fish dog says HI!!!

Since the winds are blowing and the fishing is on hold until it settles back down I just wanted to give a quick rundown of what's getting ready to happen very soon. So, if you havent got the boat tuned up and the tackle ready, you best not put it off any longer. It is March and it's time to go fishing as soon as the seas calm!!!

It's been a real mild winter so far this year and now it is the beginning of March so I don't look for much cold weather left now. The Speckled Trout and Red Drum bite has been real good just about all winter long. The winter winds have been doing like they always do this time of year, blowing up the seas to the point where it is to rough to go offshore fishing. But on those "window" days when the winds settle for a little, the fish are out there just waiting.

The Spiney Dog Sharks are here on their usual late winter/early spring run. Don't believe me, just get off the beach a little ways and drop a bait down and see what most likely will happen. But hey, they are fun to catch and great eating too!!! Just be careful of the two spines at the base of the two top fins, they can hurt you real bad with those.

The Black bass are still inshore, but will soon be making their way back offshore as spring gets closer and the water warms more. Look for the Blue fish to show up real soon and not too far behind them will be some Grey Trout and Spanish Mackeral and not to far behind those will be the King Mackeral and the Cobia. Late March and early April usually brings a short run of Atlantic Bonito, the good to eat little tunas with the straight lines on their backs, not the squiggly lines like on the False Albacore. But usually they are short lived in a week or two and they move on to where ever they go this time of year.

Offshore, all you need is good weather and some bait. I have been using the BERKLEY GULP baits lately and they are great offshore!!! The Grouper are in 100+ depths now and seem to be hungry and they really like the GULP SQUIDS. You will have to keep moving to avoid the "shark attacks" this time of year. But find the right spot and you will have a "field day" with the Grouper, B-Liners, Snappers, Triggerfish, Black Bass,(been catching some big ones lately on the GULP Shrimp) and who knows what else!!

April brings a run of King Mackeral to the Tower area nearly every year. Just a couple weeks ago, they were 4 to 6 miles SE of the Tower, the water temp was 71 to 73 degrees, so I imagine they will be there (or near by)this April like clock work. Also, mixed in with the Kings should be some False Albacore. I have been told that if you bleed these out real quick and pack them in ice immediately, they are good to eat. I had a lesson on this last year from a fellow fisherman from Florida, and I will admit that when we got in that evening, the meat was almost the color of Yellow Fin Tuna and it had a mild odor, not the dark red almost black strong odor like they are known for. I plan to give it a try this year and will report on that one later.

The Gulfstream off Southport will get fired up about the middle of March with April being the prime month and running on into May and early June if it doesen't get too hot to quick.
In the Gulfstream you can look for Wahoo, Yellowfin Tuna, Blackfin Tuna, Mahi-Mahi, and also the possibility of a Bill Fish Hook Up. It's getting real close to that time of year again where you will have to make all those decisions again about do I go offshore, stay inshore, or go to the Gulfstream? What ever you decide, it is early spring and there are some fish to be caught no matter which place you decide to fish!!!!
FISH ON!!!

Ever had one of those moments when something just hits you like a ton of bricks. That is exactly what happened to me today. Let me explain.....

I was in the recliner this morning around 10:00AM watching the TV and tieing up king mackeral rigs for the coming fishing season.

About that time, the weather came on and I was half way listening to it when it dawned on me that he just said the winds were calm.

Well, after several weeks of windy weather, I thought, I just wonder!!! I checked the Tower Buoy and sure enough, 1.3 feet every 8 seconds.

But man, it was already after 10AM and the days are still kind of short, to bad, I'm going anyway. I gave John a call and we were in the water by 11AM.

Went bottom fishing and was inundated by the sharks. Did not even go prepared for the king mackeral and there they were 4 to 6 miles SE of the Tower in 71 to 73 degree water. There were several boats there catching kings rather steady.

My goal today was to try the Berkley Gulp baits offshore on the bottom. We finally got on some structure in water deep enough to get away from the sharks.

We found this at around 3:30PM which did not leave much time left to fish. I said, win, loose, or draw, we are out of here at 5PM.

Well these gulp baits work real well offshore. I used mostly the pink colored gulp squid. Even though we did not get a big grouper bite to the top today we did get a strawberry and a small gag on the baits.

Take a look at some of the black bass and the flounder the gulp shrimp produced!!! The squid  got a King Mackeral off the bottom, and on the crabs, the grey snapper, pinky's and bee-liners thought they were just delicious. I wish I would have had time to anchor up on this hole and fish it a little longer!!

Next time out I am heading straight to this spot with the gulp baits, I think the results will be fantastic, this stuff really works great offshore as well if not better than inshore!!!!

Yes, finally a fishing report and finally the Kings are in sight of the Tower. If you get to go this weekend, I hope the kings will still be there for you!!! Till next time, FISH ON!!! Capt Butch & "Admiral Bodie" the fish dog says, Yeah Baby, I got fish slime in my hair today and scales on my teeth, and I love it!!!

Can't get fishing reports until the seas settle some. Winds a blowing and it's rough out there.

The sharks I am sure will accomodate you on the inside, better than nothing, but it's been rough inshore lately.

Be careful and go when it's safe!! FISH ON!!! Capt Butch

Well we knew it was coming, we just was hopeing not so soon. I was informed today that in about a week the fuel prices will reach 4 dollars a gallon and maybe more.

I am going to try to fish smarter this year that way I won't have to raise my prices. I am working hard to keep this so we can go fishing once in a while instead of having to just work all the time!!

Here is another plan we are going to work with again and hopefully it will work out better than it has to some in the past.

I am getting several calls about making up a trip. If you would like to share a trip with someone else just give me a call or email and I will hook you up with some others that are looking to go fishing!!

This way you guys can work out all the details among yourselves, get a date planned and we will go fishing!!

So, if you are interested in this type deal, call or email with your name and phone number and I will put you in the system and get you hooked up with others to make plans to go fishing.

So, if your buddies don't want to go fishing, here's your chance to go with others that share your love for the ocean and all the fish that are out there!!

The weather looks like it might settle for a few days next week. Maybe we will have a window to get out there and catch some fish before much longer.

Gulfstream season is just a few weeks away, get your gear ready. We are geared up and all the tackle is rigged and we are ready to go to the stream at the first break in the weather starting about mid March all the way to early June, our prime Gulfstream fishing time.

Look for the Kings to be around the Tower area in April and the bottom fish are always out there and hungry.

This is the 23rd of February, six more days and it will be March, LETS GO FISHIN'!!!! Till next time, FISH ON!!! Capt Butch & "Admiral Bodie" the fish dog, is here in the office going round in circles, he wants to go fishin' too!!!

MONDAY 2-11-08

With most of the preliminaries behind me now and only a few schools and seminars left to do it's time to start thinking about fishing more seriously now.

The new season is going to be here real soon!!!

The speckled Trout and Red Drum are biteing again some. Grubs and the ever popular "BERKLEY GULP' Baits are a nearly sure bet for both of these fish.

Whiting are reported being caught just off the beach. Fresh shrimp, or the freshest you can get is good.

Whiting like sand fleas, wonder if the frozen ones would work? Anyone tried them, if you have and they work please let us know!!

The bottom fishing is always good when you can get out. We are starting into a transition period now and that means fronts and winds for the next few months.

Unless it's like last year and it blows all year, I surely hope not. But if it does we will deal with it!!!

King Mackeral are out there somewhere around the warmer water and bait. Haven't heard of anyone catching any, but If I were going to look for them this time of year I would head 12 to 15 miles ESE of the Tower.

Find them and frozen cigar minnows are all you will need, or spoon them up on 31/2 Drone spoons on a planer!!

Bonito's should be plentiful offshore and getting better. It won't be long before the "Atlantic Bonito's" will be here. These are the good to eat ones.

Bigger Clark spoons (#1 - #2)pulled on planers is a good way to catch these. These fish have the straight bars on their backs, where the other Bonito has the "squiggly" bars on them.

The Black Bass will hang around a little longer until the water begins to warm up more. It has already warmed up about 5 degrees inshore in the last two weeks.

Grey trout will be here a little longer. The Blues should be showing up soon, may already be some here.

The Spiney Dog Sharks are definately here. The reason the sharks are called "dog fish" is because the tend to run in "packs" like a "pack of dogs".

Let a "Pack" find you and you will know it!! The reason they are called "Spiney" is because of the two spines they have at the base of the fins on top of their backs.

Be careful when you catch one, they will try their best to get that spine in you, and if they do, you will never forget it!!

Also, there is no limit, size or creel, and they are very delicious to eat. If you don't like shark meat, give one of these a try before you make that a total decision, I think you will change your mind!!!

Let's all hope we have a half way normal year this year. We need the rain to keep the ecological balance in nature so that the summer Spanish Mackeral won't stay 35 miles offshore this year like they did most of the year last year.

If you can make it, I will be at BASS PRO SHOPS at Concord Mills Mall on February 19th doing a seminar starting around 7:30. Come see us if you can!!! Till next time, FISH ON!!! Capt Butch & "Admiral Bodie" the fish dog says HI!!!.

THURSDAY 2-7-08
I just got home from spending a day in New Bern talking with and getting information proposed by the "SOUTH ATLANTIC FISHERY MANAGEMENT COUNCIL"

We are in for some "eye opening" changes in fishing as we know it now if we don't voice our opinions and get heard  by the council and "go on record" with your comments and suggestions!!!!

There is only one "Public Scoping" meeting left and it's in Charleston,SC on February 20th.

I couldn't make it to this one because I will be at  "Bass Pro Shops" the night of the 19th doing a seminar, so I went today!!!

Now is the time to do something!!!! The laws (proclomations)are already in place, but you can help determine how they will be decided to be implemented.

Sit on your laurels and do nothing and fishing as we know it today may very well be a thing of the past real soon!!!!

We all need to get involved in this!!! The meetings are held from 2:00PM - 5:00PM and from 6:00PM - 8:00PM

Copies of the public scoping documents for each topic will be posted online as they become available at www.safmc.net

Here is a segment from the "SAFMC" website you might overlook and I wanted to be sure you seen it:

The Council is also accepting written comments on these issues until 5:00 p.m. on February 22, 2008.  Copies of the public scoping documents with details on how to submit written comments on each topic are available by contacting the Council office and will be posted on the Council’s web site at www.safmc.net as they become available.  The scoping documents contain additional background information on these individual issues and will be helpful in preparing for the scoping meetings.

No one knows for certain what is going to take place just yet. But with all the commentary I heard today from both sides it looks like we are in for some different times!!!

Help us out if you can and Thanks in advance!!! Till next time, FISH ON!!! Capt Butch.

SATURDAY 2-2-08

I met up this morning with Gabriel Cortez from Wilmington, California, Rachele Oman from Altamont, Utah, Kyle Johnson from Hermiston, Oregon, Andy Rappe from Wilmington, NC and Frank Simmons from Wilmington,NC.

We were on a 1/2 day excursion and they wanted to know if the bottom fish were still inshore. My reply was I didn't know, no one had been out recently due to the rough seas.

I also made mention that it was getting time for the "dog fish" to be here. This is not necessarily a bad thing. You can catch and keep all you want and they are real good eating off the grill or from the frying pan.

Well, there may have been some Bass on the rocks, but we'll never know, we couldn't get past the "dog fish". No one was complaining though.

Fast action, great fighter, and good eating, best way I know to break up "cabin fever"!!!!

So, if you shark fishermen are wondering, then yes, the spiney dog sharks are here, and they are biteing with a vengence.

We caught 40 to 50 sharks in just a short time to fish. As I said, fast   action, good fighter, and one of the best eating sharks in the sea.

Everyone got several fresh fish dinners today, the weather and the day turned out beautiful, and we did catch several undersized Black Bass when we did get away from the sharks.

The new 12 inch limit on the Bass is makeing it tough right now to get legal fish, but I think in a few years it will be a lot better.

I really enjoyed the trip today. You guys were great and lots of fun. Thanks for sharing a part of your day with me on the "Yeah Right" while we made some more great friends and memories!!! Till next time, FISH ON and GOD BLESS!!!!! Capt Butch and "Admiral Bodie" the fish dog says, I wanted to go but just couldn't make it today.

I just got home from Richmond,VA after doing a series of seminars and meeting many very fine people in that area.

I met several who have fished with me in the past and was humbled when they said they came by just to see me again and came to attend my seminar. Thanks, that meant a lot to me and I was honored seeing you again as well!!!

I was humbled and felt very honored when a lot of you told me that the reason they were there was so you could finally meet me and attend my seminars. All you guys and gals up in the Richmond,VA area are some of the greatest people I have ever had the pleasure to meet!!!

They operate the "TRAVELING TROUT POND" and have become great friends to me and Barbara. One day soon we are going to visit them up in Ohio and let them give us a tour of the area, might even be able to talk Rob into going fishing!!!

On the way home, I stopped by and met Gary Bevell, owner of "EZ BAIT AND TACKLE" located at 2049 U.S. Hwy 117 S., Goldsboro, NC 27530. Phone (919)736-2488

As far as fishing goes, I have been away for a week and don't have a clue as to what it going on. I even told Chuck last night when he called to do the "COASTAL CAROLINA FISHING REPORTS TV" segment that he needed to call a "back up"  Capt because anything I told him would only be a guess since I have been out of town.

THURSDAY 1-17-08
The colder weather has put a "fire" under the Speckled Trout. They are biteing pretty good on the inside. Been much too rough to go offshore so fishing has been slow lately, but the Speckled Trout are at least cooperating. Haven't talked to anyone red Drum fishing lately, but I think they should be doing fair as well. I know the Specks are though. Grab the jon boat or hit the rocky points on foot and catch yourself a trout dinner!!! Till next time, FISH ON!!! Capt Butch.....

It was a great show and we were very thankful to get to see a lot of our old friends and make some new friends. I will try to update the fishing as soon as I find out anything!!

We all would appreciate any reports you may have in our "new forum", this would really help since I have been away for a while.

Again, THANK YOU ALL for making Yeah Right Charters your choice to fish with!!! We will work hard to earn your respect and do our best to provide you with the best fishing trip you will ever have!!! Come let us show you why we are a member of the BBB!!!!

A lot asked me why we were so "cheap"?

I like to call it inexpensive. It takes money to operate and maintain any business. I am not in this business to try to get rich. I love what I do, it's not about the money!!

I charge what it takes to sustain my business and my simple way of life, therefore, I do not have to charge like most. Plus, I love what I do and I am a "working man" myself so I try to keep my rates where the "working Man" can go fishing sometime, instead of just having to work all the time!!!

I love what I do so much, I told my wife that I wish I could win the lottery, then I could afford to take people fishing free so more could experience the beauty and fun that only can be found offshore fishing!!! Keep your fingers crossed, someone's going to win!!!

THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR CONTINUED SUPPORT!!! WITHOUT YOU, THERE WOULD BE NO "YEAH RIGHT CHARTERS"!!!

WE LOVE YOU ALL AND LOOK FORWARD TO FISHING WITH YOU AGAIN THIS YEAR AND OFFER A BIG WELCOME TO NEW FRIENDS FISHING WITH US THIS YEAR!!

IT IS AN ABSOLUTE HONOR MEETING EVERYONE AT THE SHOWS!!!!! Till next time, FISH ON, Capt Butch, Barbara, and "Admiral Bodie" the fish dog says, I Love you and the shows too, but there is just something special about my bed at home!!!!

MONDAY 1-7-08

I posted this in the "FORUM" but it is a lot of smaller text, us older guys and gals know what I mean!!!

   A GREAT SHOW

It is 12:45AM and I just got home from the Greensboro show. It was such a pleasure to see a bunch of old friends and make some new ones at this show. I think it was one of the best ones I have ever attended, but if I can make just one new friend and get to see old friends then that's a GREAT SHOW!!! I unveiled at this show for the first time a new lure that I have been testing for a good while and it was a big hit. It was the C W CRAB LURE, although this lure was designed for inshore Trout and Red Drum fishing, I have had good success Grouper fishing with it. Add a little scent to it,change the back hook to a circle hook, drop it in a grouper hole, and they can't resist it!! I talked to the lures designer/owner and there just may be a redesign in the future for a new "Grouper Model". You can get your own now at www.cwcrab.com and be sure to tell Chuck Capt Butch sent you!! We also unveiled the "PABCO POWERBUOY" a "must have" buoy for the serious bottom/grouper fisherman. I have tested this buoy for a year now, and my opinion is that it is the BEST out there for function and useability. We are extending our show deal to the readers of this forum. Go to www.powerbuoy.com check one out, then call factory direct at (843)665-7971 tell Mike I sent you and he will deduct $50.00 from your order. The Boneyard baits were a hit this weekend as well. These "BIG BONE GRUBS" are great on "BIG" Grouper and are something different trolled in the Gulfstream!! And you striper guys, you should see one on a "MOJO" Go to www.boneyardbaits.com take a look at some and tell John Capt Butch sent you!! Yeah Right Charters and Blue Water Candy Lures teamed up this weekend to offer a chance at Blue Water Candy's "OFFSHORE BAG" and "KING MACKERAL BAG". Thanks to all that registered to win these fantastic show prizes. This was such a big hit that Yeah Right Charters and Blue Water Candy Lures are going to team up again and do it at the Raleigh Show as well. So, if you missed this one, you will have a second chance. A "BIG THANK YOU" to Jodie at BLUE WATER CANDY LURES for his donation of these two great lure bags filled with "OFFSHORE LURES" and "KING MACKERAL RIGS" Also, a "BIG THANK YOU" to Chuck at CW CRAB LURES for the generous donation of the "CW CRAB" lures that were raffled off at our seminars. Another "BIG THANK YOU" goes to JOHN at BONEYARD BAITS for his generous donation as well for the "BIG BONE GRUBS" and jig heads that he donated for the seminar raffle as well. And another "BIG THANK YOU" goes to Richard from "NORTH CAROLINA SEAFOOD" for his generous donations of spools of rope for the seminar raffles. The raffle's this year were an added attraction to some already great lures and even greater people in the fishing business. I talked with Capt Lloyd at "BUG-EM-BAIT CO" and he is going to do his best to have the CW CRAB LURES in stock at the Raleigh Show. These shows are fun and informative. I hope I have opened up a new way of adding to everyone's enjoyment of attending the shows and seminars by getting our sponsors involved with some free samples for you at the seminars and the drawings at our booth. Which, this year was won by two great fishermen that came by to see us at the show. BTW,
The BLUE WATER CANDY LURES OFFSHORE BAG FILLED WITH OFFSHORE LURES WAS WON BY;

BOB DIETZEN from Climax,NC

The BLUEWATER CANDY LURES KING MACKERAL BAG FILLED WITH KING MACKERAL LURES WAS WON BY;

TOMMY HILL from GOLD HILL,NC

THANKS GUYS FOR STOPPING BY AND CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!

The past three days have been a "high light" in my life. I met so many new friends and got to see a lot of old friends. Sure, we all are there for the fishing and looking at all the new "BIG BOY TOYS" but you know when it really comes down to it, all we really have in this old world is each other!!
So, I want to close by saying that I, along with my wife Barbara, and "Admiral Bodie" the fish dog Thank you so much for supporting our charter business but mostly for being our friends. WE LOVE YOU ALL AND HOPE THAT GOD BLESSES ALL OF YOU IN THE NEW YEAR!!!!! Till next time, FISH ON!!! Capt Butch, Barbara, and "Admiral Bodie" the fish dog says, you need to come to the Raliegh show and watch me get those Trout at the "Trout pond"
P.S. "Admiral Bodie" here, Man I had a great show too!!! I actually got to get in the pond and chase them Trout in the water at the shows end, and I just about caught a couple, Thanks for all my fans that came by to see me, I even got mom & dad on the "Good Morning Show" on WFMY TV Friday morning with me as well, they think they had me there, but we know the truth!!
